So whats a good tool to make straight and accurate cuts ?
Is a chop saw good enough ? Not looking to make cuts accurate to the tenth. Just need something better then an angle grinder with a cut off disc attached.

Or would this be better

The HF chop saw is bunk. I hate mine and never use except to chop random huge *** pieces of angle when the occassion calls for it. I have a Dake 7x12 bandsaw so I cant really comment on the HF one. Of course either one of your options will make a more acurate cut than a grinder with a cut off wheel.
I have a Makita shop saw. I love the thing. Originally bought to help my sister cut lumber to renovate her house. Now it has a metal abrasive disk and is doing its automotive duties.

I have that hf band saw and have to say that it sucks ***.. I went back to my chop saw. To start cuts I use a half worn out blade that way you dont have as much walk.

Nice, I am really looking at the bandsaw now. Just need more opinions on it.

I have used and abused that green band saw 90blackcrx has pictured for about 8-10 years. I use it to cut large stock, drop the blade and walk away. The cuts are not acurate -- towards the end of the cut the blade has a mind of its own. I have tried adjustments, different blades, loosen and tighten blade, but nothing has worked.
I use it accasonally (sp), not as much as I intended. By far, I use a sawzall for rough cuts, and finish with a 4" grider.
Good for -- 3" and larger c channel, 3" and larger pipe and tubing, axles...
Bad for -- any plating, right angle stock, roll bar tubing (much easier w/sawzall), sheet metal
I worked at a machine shop years back where they had a BIG drop band saw ($2000 or more) that cut acurately...you will not receive these results for $100.

I have that HF band saw and it works pretty well, atleast for what I use it. It's definately worth the money. The cuts look very clean all the way to the end. Unlike what a few people said, there is no distortion or side-to-side blade movement as it makes the cut. As I said, cuts come out very streight.
The only thing I don't like about it is the stand. They could have made it beefier. It's fine when the saw is cutting, but when you move it, it starts to wobble and flex. You can bolt a few pieces of angled iron to it and fix the rigidity problem.
I bought mine for 159.99 plus tax at the local HF store. I recommend it to all

I'm another supporter of the HF bandsaw. Yeah the stand sucks but it gets the job done; after I got it I never used my chopsaw again. Say what you will, but it built the car in my sig so no complaints from me. Is it as good as a $2000 drop saw? No. Is it good enough for someone's garage shop? It was for me. I never had trouble with the cuts wondering. I use the best quality blades I can find and the only issue I have is when I jam the blade. The blade will stop but the wheels keep turning, and the blade will jump off track. So what... it works fine for me and I've gotten more then my money's worth from it. No if everyone who hates the little saw wants to pool their money and buy the guy the $2000 version, I'm sure he'll appreciate it!
i have the HF band saw and the $40 ebay chop saw. The band saw wins hands down. With a new blade it cuts very straight. The only problem I have with it is the blades wear out very fast. If I bought some high quality blades it would probably last longer....
I HATE that green bandsaw. I too have tried everything to get it to cut well, but it's just horrid. It cuts straight...but not perpendicular to the floor! Save yourself the frustration.
the $49 HF chop saw is pretty good for the money.. I"ve used it to cut all of my metal .. i'm still on my 1st disc too..

It built his car he said, so I would think it could handle collectors
