I want to do my first HPDE in the next couple months, and want a helmet I could use competetively in the future.
Do M00 helmets meet requirements for competetive use? SA00?

Competitive auto-x or competetive road racing?
Auto-X M is fine
Road Racing you will need a SA rated lid.
I have the Arai GP5-K and absolutly love it.....

Try the helmet on.....leave it on your head and walk around the store for like an hour....make sure you get a lid that fits and feels good on your nogon. I tried on Bell helmets and thought they were great until I tried on a Arai.

You want SA2000 if you want to compete on a road course. Otherwise, for HPDE and Autox (solo2) M2000 is acceptable.

Just picked up a bell Sport 3 helmet. i got it from http://www.cscracing.com, canadian store but mabey you get goo exchange and they are near the Glen so not to bad for the locals.
the helmet is a very good feel, i had to wear it for about 3 hours (playing GT4 and FIA GTR lol) and the foam fit perfectly after. But it's not the most top notch in features since the liner does not removable.

hi johng,
do you know of a place in the portland area that I could go and try helmets on (before I buy). Hopefully I have convinced my friend to do either a day with prodrive or team continental (i think that's the name) at PIR soon and I need a helmet for them.
Thanks

most groups i've run HPDEs with won't accept an M2000 helmet unless it's your first ever event, you convince them you didn't know better, and they don't have any SA-rated loaners avaliable.

I've had a different experienec. What groups are you talking about?
From NASA (wonder if this is a typo...): http://www.nasaproracing.com/hpde/preparing.html
SAFETY EQUIPMENT – Seatbelts must be in good condition. Factory seatbelts are OK. Cars without fixed roofs are required to have roll bars. Natural fibers are recommended for clothing. Minimum allowable clothing is jeans, a T-shirt & closed toe shoes. You will be required to wear a helmet when on the track. The minimum rating is SNELL M85. Newer helmets with a SA rating are recommended. Eye protection is required (face shield, goggles, safety glasses). The more and better the safety equipment you have & use, the safer you will be
BMWCCA nees Snell (M or SA not specified) 95 or newer.
http://www.windycitybmw.com/ev...p.pdf
HELMETS: Must be Snell rated 95 or newer. Helmets will be checked. Bring to pre-tech or to track registration.
My M95 helmet got me everywhere I needed to be for a few years including a couple PCA events, BMWCCA events in 4 regions, and NASA HPDE's in 2 regions. *shrug*

Does PIR have a pro shop? Considering it's internationizzle, it might have one, with helmets to try on.
Also, you could go to a ATV or Motorcycle shop, and try one ones from the same brand. Not a perfect solution but it should get you close enough for an HPDE helmet.

There are two. Race Central on 82nd in Clackamas (near the DMV) and Competition Motorsports in NE Portland (couple blocks from T&C Ford). Both are in the phone book. Not sure if either are open on the weekends anymore, so call first.
Another things you can do is go to one of the races at PIR. There are vendors, from Portland and Seattle, who have helmets you can try on or purchase.

Thanks a bunch, that is perfect. I am in clackamas, race central is a quick drive apparently. I had heard of the place but for some reason i associated it with jeep stuff! yeah i am crazy
Now I am not thinking aimlessly about what to do. You've been a LOT of help!
Also thanks to Chris F and johng, I really appreciate it guys.

I've had a good experience with http://www.saferacer.com.
picked up an sa2000 rated hybrid (openface with chin protection, basically closed face with no visor) for a shade under 200 bucks.
it's important to test fit helmets though, if you goto a shop try em on and see if they can compete with the internet, do it. if it saves you money to buy on the 'net, do it.

This is a good idea. But remember the convenience of being able to try on your helmet in advance and don't cpmplain about paying a little more for the opportunity to do so.

Yeah, i'm not advocating people joyride and simply use a shop to try stuff on. i'm all about giving them a honest chance and rewarding them for the opp. to try something on and being able to take it home right away.
Yeah, its kind of like when people go to golf shops to hit all their clubs and then order them online, i hate that. i prefer to support local businesses, plus I really need to test fit the thing, i have a small head
I agree with the last two posts as it happens all the time to us here at Pegasus.
Guys/Gals come in to try all the gear on ( spending an hour or two getting them the right stuff and size) and then buy it somewhere else for $5-10 less but, they pay shipping and sometimes have to wait if the product is not in stock.
Kind of sucks but, we help everyone the same no matter what. I have had people buy stuff elsewhere and then come here for a warranty isssue. That relly sucks but, we take care of them and hopefully make a customer out of them.
My advice is to buy from your local supplier if you can even if it is a couple of bucks more for an item. In the big picture that few dollars of difference is nothing compared to what is spent on a sesaon's race budget . Most of the time the local suppliers support your area events and help in other ways with the local clubs. It is in your best interest in the long run to support your local racing supply house when you can.
