To find the BEST answers to your question, you will have to search. By the 100th time this has been asked, people get tired of putting forth the effort to give the best explanation, look up facts, and so forth. Therefore, the best answers will not be posted here in your thread, but in those prior to them (and me) tiring of the effort to answer this question.

That said, the only answer I'm gonna give:

MILLER!!

get the hobart just as good and cheaper, if you want the best quality (wich will not be much better) get the miller. Engloid has said post after post get the Hobart if your going to buy a machine like this, just listen to him he know's what he's talking about. My .02 cents.

Thanks for the compliment.

I'll add a little bit... IF you are spending a company's money, and have the budget, by all means...buy the Miller. However, that's usually not the case. That's why I reccomend Hobart in many cases.

anyone tried the harbour freight special TIG / arc welder? rated at 160 amps, has the torch, gas tube and wires included. the only drawback it's single phase 220V.
been thinking about picking one up.

Ever try to run a hybrid car off of a 9v radio battery? It would be the same as expecting to get good welding current from a 110v outlet. The only decent 110v tig machine out there is the Miller Maxstar 140. If money's an issue, I'd gamble the money on a Hobart equivalent...

but remember...there's a reason that HF sells these machines so cheap and it's not because they just want to cut you a good deal. Just think about the sheetmetal shell that it's in. That shell alone would cost you more than you can buy their machine for...so how much money do you think they have inside the machine?

If the machine was $5, I'd say to go for it...but it's not. Buy something good and only buy one time....or buy junk and have to buy twice.

my thoughts exactly, but it IS a 220V unit, it seems well made. i suppose i can find out only one way, buying it and trying it.
i have access to a good stationary TIG, i only need a cheap portable unit i can take on the road to do small welding jobs.

I've never had any problems with my HF MIG welder. only paid 250 and it's never failed me with anything I've worked with.
