Default VTEC engagment

ive noticed when i try to engage VTEC it doesnt kick like it should, when the rpms get around 5200 i hear it engage but like i said it doesnt feel normal , i do have an autometer oil pressure gauge installed could that be the problem?

Oh ya..

Did you let your car warm up first? VTEC wont really work until the car is warmed up a little.

Not sure about how it works on the 5th gen, but if its not warmed up you won't hit vtec at all. No sound change or anything.

if you are rolling and try to mash from low 4th and hold till vtec it will sometimes feel slow. Thats normal.

If you have a CEL then its a totaly different story.

I say check your TPS....because you know how vtec is only supposed to engage at a certain throttle point right? - well, if your tps is reading that you're in 30%-40% throttle....you won't feel vtec like you're supposed to. I don't know if i really explained it that well....but something like that.

It's 5252 to be correct

OH - i think Apexi has a new unit out- its called the I-moni or something like that....i think you should be able to read the throttle % off of there....or you could get a vafcII, but that would be a waste of money - or you can just check the voltage of the TPS....i know with my fourth gen, if i stay in first and rev it until vtec engages(not crossing 30%), i can hear the high cam setting come on, but i can't feel anything at all....just a thought.....mighty good one.... - but i don't really know how 5th gens work......just try....i think the voltage should be .5v at closed and 5v WOT....but mine usually only goes up to 4.5ish @ WOT

thats the rpm that all tourque and hp curves cross on a dyno plot,

according to the helms:

IAB solenoid activates on a P13 (91-96) at 4600, and 4900 on a P5M (97-01)
VTEC solenoid activates on a P13 (91-96) at 4900, and 5200 on a P5M (97-01)

no one has asked this yes, what is the oil pressure gauge reading at 5200 rpm??? oil pressure must be at least 55 psi for vtec to engage, along with traveling <20 mph and above a certain temp

It was tuned? If some idiot tuned your car and didn't know what they were doing by setting the VTEC engagement that low then there's your problem.

I set mine to 4500 in my chipped p28, and it was a really smooth engagement (you couldn't hear the signiture vtec pop), but you could tell it was pulling harder. Just switched to a stock p13, and now my tires break loose in 2nd right when it hits. It's a huge change. I think i'm going to get it tuned on the p13 and move engagement to 4850.

Actually, its about 5200, the ecu sends the signal at about 5000, then once it moves through everything and the cams start working, then it kicks in But anyways, is all the wiring to your vtec solenoid and everything okay>?
