Default Tach & Speedometer Mechanics

I never took out the cluster to find out, but..

Tach is electrically (signal) driven, and Speedo is mechanically driven, right?

Not on my Acura. The vehicle speed sensor sends electrical pulses to the speedo and odo driver circuits -- they're electrically driven. Same with the tach, which gets its signal from the igniter/coil circuit.

yep, on the earlier models (pre 90's) the speedo is mechanic - called a pulsar unit...

later models used teh VSS on the tranny to drive the speedo circut.

hope this helps?

PS why are you interested?

if your guage cluster is USDM- and the speedo works- you might have a poor connection to the ecu or a bad cluster thingy.

My speed sensor is loose or something which causes my check engine light to come on. Does anyone know how to fix this? The repair manual says nothing. If I could locate it or see what it looks like then I could probably find one in a junkyard...

the way to fix it is to either get a new cable or try to use something to keep it from shaking out. if your speedo cable is out than you will not get vtec so its something you want to fix.
