Oil change while engine totally cold?
I was planning on an oil change for my Integra soon and was wondering if it'll be okay although unorthodox if I changed the oil with the engine cold?
I mean in theory, all the oil is gonna be at the bottom of the oil pan anyway when the engine is cold, so why not just drain it like that? when the motor has been run, warmed up and then shut down, then you'd have oil all over the motor....but I think if you change the oil with the engine cold, you can remove most of the oil from the oil pan.
If you guys can shed some light here I'd appreciate it.

There are more particles in suspension in the oil when it is hot - just like hot tea will hold more sugar than iced tea.

Cold is fine. Al the dirty oil is in the pan this way. Whether it's hot or cold, shmegma on the bottom of the pan is going to stay on they bottom of the pan. If you let your oil get that dirty, first, you sould be ashamed of yourself, and second, you should start changing every 2500 miles or so. Oil is cheap.

I would say that the shmegma is already drained out of the motor and suspended in the oil. (i am scared that I know what shemegma is)
I pour about ~1/2 of a qt. into the fill hole after a warm drain... kinda scary to see the color of the oil when it comes out.

yeah, for some reason D had cranked that bastard on there pretty good...teach him to overtighten oil filters. I usually go by the Helm 7/8ths of a turn.

I need to change my oil (Mobil1 5w-30) today (close to 2,500miles) and would much rather let it drain for a couple hours being cold then deal with hot oil.

I just changed mine yesterday. I drove the 15 minutes how from work easy. I let the car sit for 5 or 10 minutes and then went to work on it.
The oil wasn't that hot, and if you are careful you will not get burned. If you are really worried about it, keep a rag or paper towel close by and wipe your fingers off asap. Oh, and when a little warm oil hits your finger tips, make sure you don't drop the drain bolt in the pan

You're not that bright are you?? The oil pan will be hot, the head will be hot, the intake manifold will be hot, the exhaust will be hot. It's not just the oil.

If the person who installed the filter last did not put oil on the o-ring, the filter can be tighter than a ****. We have every oil filter wrench imaginable at the shop, but if someone cranked the filter on without lubing it, we are reduced to the screwdriver trick-it happens once in a blue moon. BTW change the oil when it's warm
