DOT and Snell ratings are completely independent

Not necessarily... You could just about strap a salad bowl to your head and have it be DOT approved. Snell has higher standards, which is why it's required for SCCA and most other clubs.

ok thanks...in reality i would think DOT would have stringent requirements for helmets too considering you would hope the gov't is making strict guidelines for the public to use...

*i am not arguing just stating what i think should be*

Sadly it's not :

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">DOT certification is done on the honor system. The helmet’s manufacturer determines whether his helmets satisfy DOT and then claims the qualification for himself. There is not even a reporting requirement. The government does contract for some spot check testing at commercial and private labs but not very much. In recent years much of their effort has been spent against so-called beanie helmets that are obviously substandard and are worn only by helmet law protesters.</TD></TR></TABLE>

This is DOT approved:

yeah, its really not. the govt takes a very REactive approach to liability, not a PROactive approach.

We used to call the basic DOT approved cheapo motocycle helmets "egg shells". Just don't let them hit the edge of that salad bowl.

Well, I did find an M2000 rated helmet at Meier (kinda like walmart in a not so evil empire sorta way) in Michigan, but I think they were discontinuing them. Cant really complain for a $40 legal autoX helmet.
