Found a B18C5 ... Need help!
I found a full B18C5 swap going for $3400 shipped on thepartstrader.com. The price is too good to pass up, but I wanted to check what people on honda tech thought about it. I am planning to buy the motor ASAP but I'm not too sure if its legit or not. I talked with a couple friends and they said not to get it becaues the motor will most likely be blown. The person selling the engine said that the motor works and that it came out of his civic. The reason for selling it is because he got rear ended pretty bad. Anyways what do you guys think about this and is there anything I should know about? Thanks

Ask the person selling the motor if he or she has the original V.I.N for the ITR the engine was removed from. You really don't want to be caught with a "hot motor" in your car
well, personally i dont buy motors from private parties cuz sometimes its just
but thats my personal opinion, honestly, if your serious about buying it, two things come to mind, make sure the motor is legit, get his vin number and if u want to get picky, compression check the motor if you have the stuff handy which i do

just check it out, no need to pass on a good deal because u are afraid, if you dont like the way things are goin when u start to look into it then dont buy it
Might be wise to somehow check if all the ITR parts are actually in the motor (not sure how you'd do it). For all you know, the motor can have B16 cams and no LSD.
you sound all ready to buy somthing that is prob. blown or stolen. No one that knows anything about that motor would sell for less then what they can get it for. so dont buy it. Would you sell for that cheap if it was your motor and it was in good condition? NO!
I'll call him and ask about the vin numbers and if he has any receits for the motor. Ill see what happens from there if he doesn't then I probably won't buy it. The motor is out of state, arizona.
Well this is what happened. I called the person and he said that its legit. He has the receits tand stuff from when he bought the motor. Its a jdm one so will a vin number even work on carfax? How else can I trust he person? If he has the receits then it should be ok right? What are your thoughts on this?
Get a reciept and his name/contact information. Make sure you have someone to roll the blame back on if it turns out to be Hot. If it's JDM carfax won't know anything.
I think this is the same guy I spoke to about 2 weeks ago. I was paranoid with any internet out of state purchase, especially a motor. If its the same guy, hes in Phoenix, there is an acura dealer called Bell Acura. I told that dude to take motor to Acura for an "inpection" to see if it was legit. Including all paperwork for dealer to check. I said that if all was well I would pay the labor to have motor checked in addition to purchase price. **** never called me back. I had his cell phonbe # too and he never would take my calls after that conversation. RIPOFF DONT DO IT!!! BTW I purchased a jdm B18C for $5300 shipped to me. I used pay pal so there is a record of transaction. I also used my Discover card to transfer money to pay pal. The reason being if there is a problems I have two avenues to dispute. Credit card will not charge if there is a dispute. When motor arrives it will be dealer installed. Before installl they will inspect motor and switch emmissions for approx $200. I hopefully will be successful with this approach.

As far as the reciepts, Well it doesn't take much for him to open up Microsoft word make a fake company name up and print a fake reciept.

Ok I have decided to purchase the order after I talk with the owner. I just have one more thing I need help on and that is payment. The person wants a money order which is alright with me but he says that he must recieve the payment first before he ships out the motor. I might run into a problem from this by sending him the money and he doesn't send me the engine. So what kind of options are there for payments for the engine? I asked for a COD but he said that his freight company that he uses doesn't allow COD. Also my brother told me something about using escrow or something where they hold the check I send until I recieve the motor, has anyone heard of something like this? Thanks

I'm sorry, but the approach you described provides zero security.

If Its a JDM One ask him for a picture of where the Engine code is it should say just B18C not C1 or C5 If it does just say B18C then its a JDM engine if not he is full of crap.
As far as the reciepts, Well it doesn't take much for him to open up Microsoft word make a fake company name up and print a fake reciept.
