Piston to Valve Clearances... How do these numbers sound?

Default Piston to Valve Clearances... How do these numbers sound?



.045" on #4 intakes sound a bit tight... I'm thinking about retarding the intake cam just a bit. Right now the cams are DEAD ON ***** degree'd to skunk 2's specs.

Did you get these numbers with or without the Vtec lobe engagged?? Cam gears set at 0? They seem WAY too tight to me especially ont he #4.

vtAk engaged. The cams were degree'd to Skunk2 specs listed.... I believe .060 is acceptable... but .045 is the danger zone.

This is a c5 block by the way with OEM c5 headgasket.... I have no clue if the motor has been decked. I'm going to check the CC's of the head tomorrow as well as the piston to deck clearance.

C-Speed says that .035 p-v clearance is acceptable... this seems a bit low to me. Am I mistaken here?

I believe honda factory spec is .100, but that is factory. With high rpm rod stretch, i would be a little concerned about those tight #4 clearances.

I would want to know why there is so much differance. .060 intake is safe. Does #4 have diff. valves than the others? I would find the reason for the diff. and fix that.

I spoke with Skunk2 this morning and they recommend .055-.060 minimum for intake clearances. I'm going to double check everything then reclay.

On their race engines they run .040-.045.... but these motors are taken apart after every race of course.

The head was actually radius'd. So that would explain why it is reading so different on #4. The springs are new Skunk2's that have not been run yet. I degree'd the motor 2 additional times to make sure everything was dead on... and it was. I reclayed the motor again as well, same results. I did everything again and retarded the intake cam a bit and it allowed for more clearance.

I don't understand what you mean by the head has been radiused.The fact that the spring are new means nothing if they are setup wrong.The fact that someone would assemble a head w/+.020 difference between the valve heights means to me that they probably didn't check the spring pressures also,is my point.

I agree with Ed, just trying to say it nicer. if there are not different shims under the lower spring platforms, then you have several different, installed spring heights, theirfore different seat and over the nose pressures. Get the head to some one with a Serdi or similar valve seat machine, and show him your numbers. Good job on degreeing and checking your clearances, most do not, and wonder why they "blow'ed up"

Thank you for the good information guys. Long story short... I was doing this for a friend and he thinks I'm full of **** and trying to 'price-gouge' him.

That's what happens when you work with friends. Either way, my name is not going on this engine anymore because of the tight clearances and necessary precautions that need to be taken. After blowing up 2 stock b18c5 engines and getting one replaced through Acura, the guy wants me to fully warranty the engine (provided I had nothing to do with the previous build). I've spent countless numbers of hours on this engine to be told 'I dont want you to do it anymore.'

I'm going to charge him the labor that was involved for everything up to now then give him the engine to take back where it will sit for who knows how many months.

Lesson learned - do not mix business matters with friendships.

if you were just setting his cams and giving him valve to piston, then that is OK, he is forewarned, but if you were in-charge of getting the head done then I would pull it off and get done right. On those cams I have had better luck with 33 opening-53 closing IN and 56 opening- 26 closing EX.
