Default Prelude 1995 vtec cold air induction kit

Hello there

I am thinking of upgrading to a cold air intake on my Prelude 95 vtec.
Can anyone recommend a decent upgrade kit?

I'm in Eastbourne, UK.

Thank you
Andrew

I still haven't a clue what make to go for (except K&N), but I assume that most of them do the same thing. Any idea of max price?

I'll have a look round.

I would probably recommend the k&n and ebay intake idea. I bought an aem short ram and my buddy has an aem cold air, both of us were definitely happy with it so I guess you can't go wrong either way. I had an ebay intake on my 90 lude and was happy with that too. i think the aem cold air intakes are upwards of $200 new, the ebay ones are like $50-60. Go with EBAY!!

if you're upgrading from a stock intake system ebay intake w/ k&n filter is your best bet but if you get a cold air intake get a bypass valve too so you dont suck up water. but if you're upgrading from an already aftermarket short ram just get a k&n filter for it.

Also if you do decide to go with the AEM which is more costly, I would recomend the 97+ because the piping diameter is slighty larger then the 92-96 piping.

are you just adding intake or do you plan on doing a lot of bolt on's? Ebay intake with 3" piping for sure, you dont need to spend anymore money than you need to if you just want an intake system. If your going to do more bolt ons and you want quality gains, might as well go with a V2/jays for now. Best systems out there.

I dont believe there is a J's Racing intake available for the Prelude, last I heard there was a replica in the process of being made.

I also heard that they are having problems with the new V2 intakes having shitty welds that tend to break and crack. EBAY !!!

Thank you for some very informative reading!

I've decided on the ebay option and managed to find a Prelude specific 3" induction kit for £48, including a K&N type filter. The only thing I don't quite understand is the bypass valve. Is it something I can buy separately?

I just hope its easy to fit!

im not sure what 48 is in ur currency, but u shouldnt pay more than like $30 u.s. shipped for the intake, so keep that in mind, the bypass is a filter in the middle of the intake, so if your straighten out the intake it goes filter-intake pipe-bypass-intake pipe-throttle body, if the kit does not come with a bypass you are going to 1) buy a bypass, look on ebay or u can get it from AEM but it will prolly be a little expensive 2) cut the intake pipe somewhere in the engine bay, the high up the better 3) put the bypass inbetween the two halves and use pipe sleeves and something to tighten it

You can practically double £48 to convert it to US dollars, but then everything is costly over here! I decided to buy British cos at least I know everything should fit and if I have a problem I should be able to get some help faster.

I'll keep the bypass valve in mind, but if its essential I will need to know where I can get one and any fitments to attach it to the induction pipe.

Thank you very much for your help, its been yet another education of many!

Cheers

48.00 GBP United Kingdom Pounds = $92.1887 USD United States Dollars
1 GBP = 1.92060 USD 1 USD = 0.520671 GBP

Seems a little pricey to me for an ebay intake and not even a real K&N filter.

I would only get the bypass valve if you regularly go through large/deep puddles so you dont suck water up....I dont really like mine but I live in FL so I have to have one. Didnt someone do a dyno before and after the bypass install? Didnt the HP numbers go ?

I'm a little upset now! Oh well I do hope it does the job as well as any other.

I know we always go on about the weather over here, but you try and figure it out! We do have rainy days, but its never too bad and I don't intend on deliberately driving thru the deepest puddles for the sake of it, so I'll put the bypass valve on the back burner. The induction kit sits practically in the same place as the existing filter, so no real chance of any new water problems.

There is one thing though; after checking the existing intake and all its bits I've noticed a 'U-bend' attachment under the main intake pipe. What is this and is it fine to remove the whole lot? By the looks of it I will just be replacing like for like and immediately be able to drive away without any problems. Famous last words ay!

You will have to wish me luck. I hate messing about with my cars, but it must be done!

I'll have to publish photos and spec on this site at some stage.

I think you are thinking of a Short Ram Intake, in this setup the filter is under the
hood, in the Cold Air Intake system the filter is behind the front bumper and lower
to the ground to get colder air.

If I were you I would just get a type S intake, I have heard mixed things about both Cold Air and Short Ram, but only good things about the Type S. The Type S is
more expensive than the ebay kit, but you may get better low end and high end gains rather than losing one or the other.

Search for 'CAI' or 'intake' to get some detailed answers.

Ah maybe I do mean short ram air induction.

I've got mine now. It turned up today. Without instructions mind you.

I should be able to install it easily anyway.

Thank you for your help.
