Question about high mileage and turbo???
My car is slow and I want to make it faster. What should I do? Turbo or engine swap? My D16Y8 has 95,xxx I do all the basic mantinence but I dont know the conditon of the engine or how much longer its going to last because I drive it kinda hard. I have probably taken it to redline about 15 times since I bought the car 2 years ago with 69.xxx miles. I would rather turbo it but someone told me that my mileage was too high to do so and I dont know if the engine will be able to handle it. What do I need to check to see if it can handle turbo? I heard that I could get a compression and leak test to see if the engine is still in good shape. Is that true? Where would I go to get that done? Either way I am going to be spending around $5000.
With 5 grand you could:
Fully build your D16, then go boost... and if you tune it right and maintain it well it could last.
OR
B series swap. It'll be super reliable but definitly not as quick as a boosted D16.

I am going to need the car for a while. If I went with an engine swap I was planning on getting a B16A2 or a B18C1. If I had the money for both I would get a B18B1 and turbo it.

No your mileage isn't too high some ppl turbo with over 100k on the engine go to the forced induction forum and you could get ample info on blowin (turboin) your engine and do you believe you will have to spend 5k on you car or is that the budget you have to spend?

I dont have all the money yet but there is defintily going to be a budget. The reason I say $5,000 is that my friend turboed his D16 with a Greddy turbo kit and it for everything including the install was around $4500. Samething with an engine swap, I found a B18C1 for $3000 and the install is going to be around $1250. And no I dont want to do the swap or turbo install my self, I know if I did I would **** something up like I do everytime I try to do something.

I'd say your motor should be healthy enough. To know for sure, run a compression and leak down test and see how your numbers look. You could definetly piece together your own kit for less than 5k, do some research. And stop being so negative on yourself, jo0 can dooo it!

What about the 15+ times I took it to redline? Where would I go to get a compression and leak down test? What numbers would be good? Even if I do piece together a kit I am still taking it somewhere it get it installed. My friend got his turbo LS worked on where I am planning on taking mine. He has had no problems at all. If anything goes wrong you can take it back to them and they will figure out the problem and fix it.

the dealership or another shop could do a compression and leakdown test for you.
Or you could by the stuff do the tests yourself for less than the test cost.

At Victoria's Secret. Or maybe Applebee's. C'mon man, honestly. How about Napa, AutoZone, PepBoys, whatever automotive place is local. As for the numbers, a Helm's manual should tell you where your motor should be. Don't be a wuss about redlining it, if you turbo it then expect to see redline daily

I think I am just going to get my short block rebuilt. Is the a good price for a rebuild: Estimate is $1,600-$1,800. I'll figure everything out if you have me build it. Block will be bored, CP pistons, RM rods, ACL bearings, ARP head studs, OEM HG, timing belt/tensioner.
He says it will be able to hold 18 psi and I should get around 250whp

i say get a b series swap because to build your engine, turbo it, and tune it right that could cost you a little more than 5 grand. and turbos are FORCED induction so reliability wise you'll feel better with the swap
