Default does carbon fiber need to be molded?

did quick search first. can cf only be done in a mold? i'd like to make a sub box with it, or lay it over a fiberglass box. does it need a mold or can you use it like fiberglass and paint on resin, or will it not be nice and shiney w/out a mold. sorry for the noob fab question.

im pretty sure it can be as there are two kinds of carbon fibre - wet and dry - the former which is formed much like fibreglass if im correct and the latter which is made in a vacuum bag. im sure someone with more knowledge on the subject will be able to help. dry is the stronger type which is used for f1 monocque chassis (ignore my poor spelling lol)

yeah it can be layed down however because generally carbon fiber is seen you need to have it layed out pretty clean and it can be time consuming.
