Default Type R and S2000 in same price range?

Well in an effort to narrow down my choices for a new car, I have accidentally added another one to my list. I just realized that the 2000 S2000 is right in the same price range as a 98/00 R. Now I've read almost every post here about how the R is a more "raw" car and tha the S2000 just doesnt "feel" as good as the R. My question is that should I consider buying the S2000 or just continue to look for the R as well as the other cars on my list?

TIA

If you can find a 2000 S2000 for ~$20k - $22k, then I'd seriously consider it. FR setup is very nice.

They are two very different cars.

S2000:
- Provides open-top motoring
- "Cute"
- Will be prohibited from some track events due to its open top

ITR:
- Holds a crapload of stuff
- Has a backseat for dogs, kids, even an adult or two in a pinch
- Much better traction in wet and wintry conditions

They're both great cars - all depends on what you're looking for.

FR setup is very nice.
Not on winter roads, it's not.

If you can get a S2K that cheap - I would wonder about it's condition - but otherwise jump at the chance.

Your insurance will probably be higher for the S2K though. If you are a younger driver this is probably your biggest consideration.

I'd still get the R not sure if he's sold his yet, but Cyberorth may still have his for sale. Pristine 98 for just under 18K

yoshi - who may be biased towards the R after deciding not to get an st00k

I agree with Ken... but #1 & #3 on S2000 charateristics can be changed with some $$$. As for the list on ITR charateristics... who cares about wet traction?

There are some nice parts for the S2000 if you are going to do some modifications. The Integra Type R is also a very nice choice...its up to you.

Get the S2K if it is your second (or third, forth,... ) car
Get the ITR if it is your only car
Either way, both are nice cars

What, you mean welding a roof onto your S2000? I don't think it would pass tech inspection with the groups that ban open-top cars from their events... (not that I would recommend doing this anyway)

True... but, you'll need a beater if you get an ITR. No more parking outside for more than 15 minutes w/ ITR (if in Cali, Seattle, NY, etc.) S2000 is more safe.

My brother races his S2000 in the Poconos and all he needs to race with the top down are arm restaints and a helmet. Hundred bucks or so.

Thanks for the responses guys. Unfortunately, whatever car I decide to get will be my daily driver. I no longer have the luxury of having a beater. I am paranoid as it as about my gs-r, but I refuse to live in a cage just because thieves exist. The way it looks so far is that the R is my best bet. I really want a sports car for not too much money, and I belive the R to be the most bang for the buck. My only other options are the camaro SS, firebird ws6, or (and I hate to say this), a 99 mustang saleen.

It depends on the group. Some groups will let open-top cars run. Some groups will require a full roll cage to let open-top cars run. And many groups will not allow open-top cars to run under any circumstances. In fact, most of the Midwestern chapters of BMW CCA don't allow open-top cars to run at all - rather surprising when you consider all the various models of BMW with open tops (Z3, M Roadster, M3 Convertible, Z8).

BTW, a used 2000 S2000 usually sells for thousands more than an ITR...

Can't you buy the hard top from Honda? It about $3,000.

Groups that ban open-top cars from their track events will do so even if there's a removable hard top on it.

Not true.........the S2K is considerably easier on insurance. I actually had one on order, but decided to get the R for practicallity. (snow, hauling stuff and people).

My insurance is ~2200 on the R.........would have been ~1200 for the S2k.
Remember who buys (and steals) these cars.

I pay 600*2 for the ITR and the s2k is going to be 700*2 annually.

What company are you using........I need to give them a call,!

The 3 year differnece in our cars probably has a little to do with that, but not that much.
