Cool Cars You actually *could* own...
Whats out there that you REALLY like, could afford, but just haven't managed to pick up? Sure, I'd like a Mac F1, who wouldn't? But I'm being realistic here.
Two cars that have always pushed my buttons...
1997 Camaro SS
I just plain love the brute force of this car. A poorly driven one still kicked my *** at a DE at VIR a few years back when I still had my Integra. It was bone assed stock and he blew by me on the back straight like I was dragging a canoe full of fat chicks. I still remember that "Well Fuuuuck Me" feeling it gave me.
I'll take mine in black.
1995 BMW M3
Not a real stretch here, but dammit I just love everything about these cars. One of the few cars ever that just plain got it ALL right. I've wanted one badly for 10 years. So much so that multiple times I've thought "If I just give up racing I can get that M3." But that thought always passes.
I like the silver here. Or black of course.
I could actually go buy either of these tomorrow, but common sense keeps prevailing. We already have 4 cars, pay too much insurance, and are out of parking space at the house.

Agreed.
I'm kind of digging the whole C4 thing that GRM is getting into as well. I've never "loved" those cars, but the more I see them on course (cones or curbs) the more I like them.
I'd also like to own a stock second gen MR-2 Turbo. A little smaller and more tossable, but with a decent amount of power. I drove one a little over a year ago. Man was that cool, rear wheel drive, slip angle, and, "whoa Nellie, that not stock boost!"

twin turbo FD in red, minus apex seal problems
bmw 74 2002 tii, no rust, any color.
69 Camaro RS

66 mustang fastback
i'm going to look at pr0n now to get my mind off of cars.

I don't know why I have a list of these cars...maybe it's because I actually can own them, as opposed to most of the F-cars and other crap out there I don't even notice at the track. Some of these I have owned, some I WILL own...soon, oh yes, soon. Maybe even before I finish the next ITA project.

Hmm..
The Type R has always been the one that "got away" for me. I was thiiiiiis close to trading in my GSR on a used one in 2001, had the paperwork in motion, had a monthly quote, insurance, then I just happened to pop the hood and check the oil. No oil on the dipstick. not a drop. I walked away.
Haven't been that close since because one hasn't shown up that is unmolested.
The Miata is one that I think most people will overlook. I've been daily driving mine for 2 + years now. It is absolutely stinkin' fun to drive. No it's not that fast, or even all that great to be able to put the top down, but its FUN.
Agreed on the E36 M3 as well. Just don't want to restore a 10 year old car to make it last for another 3 before the trademark every-three-years-this-car-needs-$3k-in-repairs that most BMW's I've been involved with happens.
I see your point on the Camaro. The resale on these things is ridiculous. Pocket change really if you look hard enough. I saw one with 60k miles on it about a year ago for 8k. Performance buy of the decade. But talk about your depreciation. Ouch for the first owner.

My next 2 in line (I hope!):
'99+ Miata, preferably 6 speed. I will keep it stock except for maybe an exhaust, and just have an enjoyable street car, that can go on track occasionally. I just miss having a convertable, and I would LOVE to have one that is comfortable on the street. (And I have never had a car w/ a 6 speed)
E36 BMW. Maybe an M3, maybe just a 325i. Don't really care. This just seems to me to be the best "do everything" car. I already have a race car, so I don't need it to do that. I need a nice street car that I can throw the dogs in the back seat, hook up the jet ski to the hitch, and go for a long weekend at the river. Right now, the '85 325e is doing that, and doing it fairly well. This would just be an upgrade to that.
Sadly enough, there are not really any other cars that I really want right now. Nothing is pushing my buttons, at all.

I had two that I did own. Briefly I owned the last gen. Mazda twin turbo RX7. Pretty car, light, but man the engine was fragile. Then bought a 94 twin turbo black wingless Supra. Heavier but a hell of a lot better bolted together and actually a great handling car. Had it for almost six years and 88K miles. GREAT CAR. I agree on the E36 M3 and thought seriously about buying one but instead bought a TSX last week. Very nice car.
But my most fun car is the one now. The 88 CRX Si that is a dedicated track car. The most fun I have ever had in a car. It has both power and handling and sounds bad *** when it is wound up.
Barry H.

I guess I'm a Honda guy through and through.
I really love my GSR. I think I would love a Type R even more. CW would suit me well - if I'm gonna do it, do it traditional.
CRXen really get me going too. 2nd gen Si in red would be fantaztic.
I grew up a German car fan - VWs, BMWs... But for some reason the mechanical lightness of being that Hondas possess (compared to the hefty Teutonic feel) seduced me.
OH - how could I forget. I want a Miata as a 2nd car. Me likey them too.

i bought a 1997 type r w/ 5k miles on it in 2000... i hated it... i was so used to driving an S2000 that I couldn't stand the ITR... i sold it in less than 5 months.

Hmmmm...
New cars...
Honda Accord Hybrid (until somebody builds a neat hybrid sports car)
Volvo V70R
Honda S2000 or Porsche Boxster S
Used...
E36 M3
Cadillac CTS-V
GMC Typhoon
But, Laura has me 99% talked into a slightly used Volvo S60/V70 as the replacement for the GMC.

My lovely wife, god bless her, had that exact car a couple years before I met her. She traded it in on a four door Civic with an automatic because she was sick of shifting gears in traffic and didn't like how it handled in the snow. Argh, if only we met sooner...she wanted to get married way before I did, if she still had that CRX it would have happened alot quicker!
Right now, I've been thinking more and more about ITB/ITC cars. That fits for me, cool and affordable.

Scott, the racing curse has you in such a tight grip... this will never work for you!
I tried this plan for a few years between 1998 - 2002, mainly due to parenthood priorities. Sold the race car and tried 2-3 different street/track cars and thought I'd found the right combination with a 2001 S2000...until VIR (and other venues) began to require soft-tops to have real roll bars. I just couldn't hack up this nice car and put a roll bar in it! So I sold it and found my '98 ITR, which gradually went from street/track car to HC race car after about 2 years. Now I'm sorta back in.
We all need serious rehab to kick this habit. A cool street car won't do it!

Well, me.
I've never been impressed with these cars. I think they are over hyped, over priced theft bait.
Give me about 2/3rds what you will still pay for a nice Type R and I'll build you one sweet GSR that will whip the ITRs *** and be a whole lot safer to park in public.
Not that its not a great car, it is. Its just not that much greater than a plain old GSR... Of which there are hundreds of thousands that can be had CHEAP.
Funny though. I see the E36 M3 on this list a whole lot.

and yep one day I will own a 67 Camaro, preferring the RS/SS with hidden headlights... small block, muncie 4spd please. ahrrr, ahrrr, ahrrr...
IF and when I'm ready to give up racing.

New:
- IS300
- 350Z
- Madzaspeed Miata
- MAYBE a S2000...if they weren't so ugly, i'd be sold.
Old:
- Supra (who doesn't?)
- Original Mini Cooper
- MR2 Turbo
- Cressida w/ Supra engine (read: badass)

M3 Coupe
'98 Dodge Viper RT-10 (just barely....would definitely have to give up racing to afford this)
'95 Acura NSX (seen 'em as low as $30,000 in decent condition)
'66 Ford Mustang
My uncle had a '52 Cadillac limousine, that he offered to me for $5000, but I didn't have the room to store it.
That's just the list I could afford.

It would need to a 01 Mustang Bullitt (Green) so the fleet, as it is, would match my 65 fastback. And the other one would have to be a 97-98 Lincoln Mark VIII (super sleeper)
Those would be the best two cars that I can think of.

For the next car I'd actually buy, I'm torn between a Miata, S2000 and the Elise. I'm leaning hard towards the Elise, but I'd take any one. My girl likes the Boxter S though, but they're a bit pricey for me.
For a daily driver / mixed duty, I do love the Minis, and the E36. I'm waiting to see if the new GTI is as good as everyone is saying; but I just don't like the way it looks. The 20th aniversary edition made me weak in the knees, but the performance just wasn't there; I'm hoping that it'll be good enough to forget that it's not that pretty.

E30 M3
Ur-Quattro (20v please)
2nd gen. RX7 Turbo II... I had one of these in college but could never afford to make it mechanically perfect. I think I would do it right this time.
I can't really "afford" any of these because I have a race car. My NX2000 just died this week and it's time to find a car for 3000$CAD, which is my "real" budget. I want a Neon, the girlfriend has vetoed it, so it looks like it will be a 240 SX or Civic (so hard to find examples with little or no rust here).
