Default What a Car! Most Track Miles EvaRRR! Mid-Ohohoho!

I see Chris already created a topic about this event. I've got a few notes here, including some advice and insight when putting a lot of miles on the car in a track event, so I thought I'd create a separate topic.

Well... The weather gods were smiling on Mid-Ohio this past weekend, and so were all the other gods. What a great event! Northern Ohio Chapter BMW CCA puts on a well-run event anyway, such as their annual Memorial Day weekend event. This was the first time they tried doing an event in early April. Fortunately for the participants, and unfortunately for the club, this event was less than one half full, with only 39 students, taught by 29 instructors. They combined the A and B run groups and gave everyone more track time, and traffic was never a problem.

At most track events, students typically drive around 150 track miles total, split between Saturday and Sunday. We instructors typically drive 100 on Saturday and Sunday, but also get (and pay for) a lapping day on Friday, when it's possible to drive 200 miles or so, if you feel like it. So if the weather cooperates, it's occasionally possible for an instructor to drive 300 track miles in a single event.

And this past weekend, the weather DID cooperate. It was perfect - sunny every day, with high temperatures around 60 on Friday, and around 70 on Saturday and Sunday.

This time, instructors had the opportunity for even more track time than usual. Because the student run groups were so small, instructors could go out in any of the student groups without the track getting too crowded. Plus, most instructors only had one student to instruct, instead of the usual two or three.

Since Mid-Ohio is my favorite track, I drove. And drove. And drove. By the end of the three days, I put 519 track miles on my R!!! Awesome, simply awesome. And the car did everything that was asked of it. No problems at all! Sure, it consumed things that get consumed... like oil, and tires, and brake pads. But I was prepared for all of that.

I brought a couple of quarts of oil with me, and it consumed 2.5 quarts. No problem.

I brought eight tires with me (actually, I brought 12 tires with me, because I had met a friend partway to the track, and I picked up a set of NSX wheels/tires from him... and yes, you can fit 12 wheels/tires inside the ITR* - 13, if you count the spare - along with track gear and other stuff). I purposely brought a set of worn Yokohama A032R track tires so that I could finish them up, and a set of almost new Toyo RA-1 tires to use when the Yokos were shot, and that worked out exactly as planned. I learned that the Yokos need several pounds less air pressure than the Toyos for optimal performance. I also confirmed that, although the rear tires wear a lot slower than the front ones, it's possible to wear rears through to the belts, too.

I started the event with almost new Cobalt GT Sport front pads and still had decent thickness on the rear (Endless CC-X). By the end of the event, I still had 3-4 mm thickness in the front, so I never had to change pads (although I had brought spares with me). I also brought a spare pair of rotors, but I didn't have to change those, either. I now have over 1100 actual track miles on the front set of $25 Autozone rotors and they're still doing great; I'm very pleased with their longevity.

It was nice to see the Chris93si there with his PY ITR, as well as his friend Erik with the ITRish Integra (which unfortunately experienced a mechanical failure and was towed home).

The only incident that occurred was caused by a mechanical failure leading to a loss of steering on a Camaro. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

All in all, this was a wonderful, memorable weekend. Definitely one of the very best track events of the many (150 or so) I've done.

*To fit 12 tires inside the R:
2 stacked horizontally at the rear of the hatch, on the left side
4 lined up vertically across the hatch between the shock towers
2 vertically behind the driver's seat in front of the previous 4
2 vertically behind the passenger's seat in the same way
2 vertically on the passenger seat

Yup.

I know you can put another one in the spare tire well, replacing the spare, but I don't know whether that raises the level of the hatch floor enough that you can't fit the others the way I described...

Great report

Is your ITR stock? I'm a bit worried if the ITR can stand often trasck sessions? I'm doing 1 track session per week, which is about 50 miles per week. My ITR takes about 0.4-0.5 quart of oil per each session. Should I worry?

I can verify that 12 wheels/tires were in Ken's caR and that he was running out to the track every time I turned around

&lt; Who put ~180 miles on his caR as a student

Sounds like you all could not have been blessed with better weather for the event. All in all it sounds like both of you (Ken and Chris) have nothing but positive things to say regarding the event.....thats awesome and glad to see/hear you all had a blast

I took some photos after I got home. They're still in the camera (conventional film camera ). If they come out okay, I'll post them when I get them developed.

The only performance mods I have are brake pads and tires. (I also have HID lights and have modded the shift **** and stereo.)

519 track miles in 3 days ==&gt; YES!

I don't think so. Just keep filling it with oil, so the oil level doesn't drop below the lower dot on the dipstick.

A few notes about that many tires inside the car...

I know you can fit this many stock sized tires in the car. In this case, ten of the tires were 205/50-15, and two were 225/50-16. Compared with the stock 195/55-15, the 205/50-15 are wider but slightly smaller in outer diameter.

I brought a strong rope with me, and tied the wheel directly behind the driver's seat to the tie-down brackets at the ends of the bar at the rear of the hatch. This was as a precaution for any unexpectedly hard stops on the road (as well as to prevent them from shifting around). Even with the rope, I'm still not crazy about the idea of driving with all that weight directly behind me in the car.

The car's acceleration was noticeably slower with all that weight in the car (probably close to 500 pounds for the 12 wheels/tires). Good thing I didn't drive around the track that way.

In order to fit the wheels/tires behind the driver's seat, I had to put the seat slightly forward of where I normally position it, so I had slightly less legroom. It wasn't all that uncomfortable, but might be a problem for overtall people (I'm 5' 8.5").

You can get more tires in the caR if you remove the rear seats.

Sounds like an awesome event, RAm. was fun too (would have been more fun in an ITR), nice and un-crowded.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by nsxtasy &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I created a separate topic with my notes from the event, because I learned a lot</TD></TR></TABLE>

So, what'd you learn? How to pack a dozen tires? What the car consumes in tires/pads in 500 track miles? That it's possible to cord rears, even if it doesn't look like they're wearing much? I guess that is a few things. Quite a lot to learn for an old dog (I'm just making sure I glean as much wisdom as possible, want to make sure you're not holding back)

Don't be a wuss! I can fit a set of 4 stock wheels and R-compounds in my S2000 no problem (with the roof closed nonetheless). One goes in the well in the trunk, upright. Open your roof. Two are placed vertically on the passenger seat. Then one goes horizontally on top of those two. Then take 2 bungee cords and secure the tires on the passenger seat all together so they are not falling all over you while driving. Close your roof. You will still have plenty of room in the trunk for 2 overnight bags and some other small stuff. And there is still room on the passenger side floor for your floor jack, tire iron, tire pump, and jackstands.

Hey, don't forget, I put four in my NSX (one in the trunk, one behind the passenger seat, and two vertically on the passenger seat). As well as my overnight bag, helmet, floor jack, etc. And I never open my roof...

Here's what fits in the NSX:

Well, the other thing is, what to bring to the track. I mean, I NEVER would have planned on driving 500 track miles in a weekend. And I try not to bring stuff I don't think I might need. But I normally bring an extra set of pads (front and rear), basic tools for changing, oil (2 quarts), tires (I normally bring six, figuring that I am unlikely to toast more than two unless the ones I bring are REALLY worn, which they were this time), and usually a pair of front rotors (just in case).
