so this is what i did to install my fancy new ipod into my 97 civic lx

a while ago i searched honda tech for somethign like this, but couldnt' find anything, so i figured out how to do it, and am now sharing it with the community, if this exists elsewhere, sorry.

so, i didn't want to spend the money to get a fancy new headunit with an aux in, or spend on the money on a kit that'll do it for me, specially since they are like $150 or more, nor did i want a craptastic itrip (they suck *****)

so, not sure which gens this applys to, but in my civic the cd player is seperate from the radio and is connected to the radio through an 8 pin connecter. you can get the pin diagram from http://carstereohelp.net/wireharness_Honda1.htm

so i just spliced open the casing of the main cable, removed about 2 inches of the sheath and sheilding, and inside there were 2 gray sheaths, one of which contained the 3 audio signal wires (left channel, right channel, ground) i took those cables that i needed, and cut them, hooked up some extension wires. i attached them cd player side of the wires to one side of a dual pole dual throw (DPDT) switch i picked up from radio shack for 4 bucks, the center poles got hooked upto the headunit side of that wire, then i took an RCA mini to RCA cable i had laying around with the RCA end chopped off (available at best buy for 8 bucks or so) and attached to to the remaining side of the toggle switch. so now i can switch between my ipod and my cd player.

to get the system to work, just plug the ipod into the rca mini cable, turn the ipod volume all the way up, and put the radio on "cd mode" (you have to have a cd in the cd player for it to work)

the sound quality is great, haven't had any problems with it yet!
