Default engine noises, take a listen

NOTE: apologize for quality, only mic i have is on my digicam

Clip 1
Clip 2

The first 5 or 6 seconds of the first .wav file you can hear an odd recurring noise at idle, then I blip the throttle and you can hear a noise up until around 22 or 23 seconds... after that a new noise comes into play as i hold the throttle at just above idle. The second .wav file isn't as helpful but I added it just in case.

The camera was held about 6 inches from the valve cover. I'm hearing some noise out of what i think is the valvetrain, but there's also a significant amount of pinging type noise coming from the distributor.

Its about time to do a tune up and replace distributor cap and rotor, but if the distributor itself is whats causing the noise then i dont wanna waste the money on the cap/rotor. Can anyone make sense of these noises from what little i've given you to work with?

Also, I adjusted my valves several months ago and rechecked them twice before I ever put the valvecover back on, so i feel pretty certain that they were correct even though it was my first time doing so.

EDIT: Decided to take the distr. cap off and take a look...

Looks to me like some contact is being made and the cap/rotor could very well be the source of some noise b/c of it.

that distributor looks fine most of the noise you hear iss related to your valvetrain most likely loose valves or worst case you skipped a tooth and valves are hitting could be auto tensioner? if you have one? definitely would check out the belt and timing

That sounds like alot more than the dizzy cap mang. Check your base timing.

it sounds like the Valvecover is missing something...

is the PCV secure? the breather? the oil cap? I ran without a PCV (just a hole in the valve cover) and it sounded a lot like that.

If not, it also kinda sounds like a timing belt flopping around. Its hard to tell w/ a digital reproduction of the sound (through my onboard speaker, no less ) but based on what I hear, thats where I would focus my attention.

edit: and that looks like normal wear on a cap & rotor

thanks for all the replies so far fellas...

I checked everything with the valve cover just now to be sure, and everything is in place and secure.

I'm gonna recheck my valves and timing as soon as i get the chance. Unfortunately that will probably be next weekend at the earliest.

I thought it was an Isuzu Diesel at idle there for a minute...

You definately have a problem with your valve train. I would pull the valve cover and check your tolerances again...Make sure you let the engine sit for 24 hours before you do so...

That's what my car sounds like when it's low on oil. Hopefully you checked the obvious though
