Default Power window failure

Ok, my friend has this problem with his car. He's got a 91' Legend 4 door, and his driver's side window won't roll up anymore. This happened once before. It would roll down, but won't roll back up again. While the other windows all function normally. What is the problem? Is it the switch, the power window motor inside the door or what? Does anyone know what would cause this? Thanks.

Can you hear the motor turn on?

My power windows on my civic went out recently, the windows came out of it's tracks and I had to put them back in. Without it being on the tracks the window woud get jammed 1/3 the way up.

Down but not up? It sounds like the switch has oxidized contacts. Best bet is to replace it, but sometimes the switch can be repaired. If it's not too bad, a can of "contact cleaner" or "tuner cleaner" from Radio Shack can get it working.

If you take the switch apart, you'll see the contact pads. If they're all oxidized, clean the contacts. Use the striker from a matchbook -- not regular sandpaper. Also, sometimes the oxidation causes a high resistance in the switch. This results in too much current flow through the contacts and they can get hot enough to melt the plastic that holds them. If this happens, the contact pads will "sink into" the plastic and you'll have to scrape away the excess plastic to make sure the pads make good electrical contact. If it's melted too badly, you'll have to replace the switch.
