Sounds like you have syncro problems.
You will need to open the tranny and see
Enjoy your stay

GrlRcr4, did you buy Scotty's old Type-R? The 01 with 24k? I so wanted to buy it.
I've been keeping count of all the ITRs on the Big Island. For a small population, there are a lot. I see an ITR almost everyday.

Have you tried flushing your tranny fluid? Fifth gear is the highest on the set inside the housing, so it is the first to be 'dry' when low on MTF.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions on synchros. I would check out the detent ball springs. They are probably pretty cheap and you can easily change them without dropping the trans out of the car.
Okay...well I found out I have a slow leak somewhere....We drained the tranny fluid and there wasn't very much fluid in there...I used the synchromesh and it hasn't done it since! Now I just need to fix the leak. Thanx for all the advise!
