Repainting a Type-R other than factory color?
What would happen to the value of a Type-R if it was painted a different color other than stock. Say for instance you painted a yellow Type-R Championship White. Not just any off the wall color but just wondering since they did not come in White in the US in 2000-2001. What would this do to the value?
If you plan to keep the car it should really not make a heck of a whole lot of difference I would think. I know this will not make the car go faster so no post about that please. What if you did a JDM front end then you are really only painting half of the car to match. In this case just say you paint the rear to match the front in white.
Hell the Type-R is not in any blue book anyway and dealers pull values for them out of there *** I think in the first place, so only those who know the car really know the value.
Just a question?

I think anything on the car that was not straight from the factory, would make it worth or cost less. Most buyers want factory stuff rather than aftermarket. Also, I think different colors would also make a difference on your insurance. I'm not positive about that though.
Painting would probably lower the re-sale value of your car because of the aspect of someone buying a car that has been painted a different color.

also: painting a PY -> CW without doing the engine bay would make it look like an egg when the hood's open. I would pay that much less for it.
..but then again if it's for a JDM conversion, I would pay back what I had saved before and learn to deal with the whole egg ordeal.
and then I would call my car a JDM EGG - true rarity and then my R would never be stolen because the one and only JDM egg would just be known as MY car.
But then again you could just skip the whole egg-ageration and just paint the engine bay too.

I know it is crazy just something I was wondering after talking about things with some local guys. One wants to repaint a Black R Milano red like the JDM and Ausie R's.

Unless it was in one hell of an accident, repainting an R just seems sacreligious, regardless of color. I also agree, there is a stigma attached to non-factory paintjobs--even if they suck like most Honda factory paintjobs do
speaking of sacreligious, a guy i know who owns a 2000... painted his black r to vw yellow...WHY???????i own a yellow one, but a black one is just as beautiful if kept clean.
Unless it's a complete color change to something American Honda did not offer on the ITR color palette, it's not worth it. It makes no sense to paint a ITR black, yellow or white because they exist. To paint it properly requires you to fully strip the car to get a good as factory finish and will cost way over $5K. But would be interesting to see a US ITR with silverstone metallic paint and red J-spec recaros or a ITR with a blue pearl added to OEM CW paint.
my car got keyed...I was thinking about repainting it the Arctic Blue, the color of the new DC5 R...dunno how much it will cost tho, but it could possibly happen
My friend has the PY ITR and HATES it. He keeps asking me what I think he should do since he wants black, so i keep saying sell it and get a black one, but you know how you guys are with your Rs. He wants HIS ITR...
I do agree that even the Honda O.E job has too much orange peel - perhaps you can wetsand it and buff it?
I just stripped my 1992 CX hatch down to NOTHING to have it painted Vogue Silver Metallic - another overseas ITR color - and it is costing me $3,200 for base/clear inside, ouside, underhood, etc. and I did all the teardown with the helps of friends!
Painting a car CORRECTLY is NOT cheap NOR easy!

No, just pick half of your body panels and leave them primered.
Chris, who suggests you don't change the color because it will make the value drop.

just rip the bumper off and drive around with it dragging behind you wrc style for a day or so then duct tape it back on and spray paint the duct tape some non-matching yellow.
