Who Drives on their R Compounds to the Track?
I want to get a set of R compounds but don't really think I need another set of wheels. The car only really comes out of the garage when it is going to and from the track. The local track is only about 20 miles away so there is no problem there, but another track I will be frequenting is about 160 miles away so that may be a problem..
Is anybody driving to the track on their R compounds? What is the distance and what is tire wear like? I'd be looking at something like the A032 or Toyo - something not as hardcore as a Hoosier or Kumho...

I would be concerned enough to get another set of cheap wheels and tires to drive back and forth. Twice I drove to my local track 50 miles each way on v700's, and the wear was noticeable. Not a lot, but noticeable. Also keep in mind, it's not just visible tire wear you should be concerned about, but also the heat cycles. This won't be as pronounced in track tires that wear like iron like toyo's, but something to keep in mind.
are we talking a032r's from yoko? i've seen people daily drive these. im not sure if it is the greatest idea, but take it for what it is worth. my guess is that you are going to put a lot of wear on them. so consider that cost vs. buying another set of wheels.
The way I'd look at it is not if it's safe either wet or dry to commute to the track on R's but, the money spent on R's if you flatten or otherwise damage one on the way you're SOL or will be way late or otherwise inconvenience yourself.
A second set of dedicated wheels with R comp's is the way to go.
Anton who has 4 full sets last time he counted

You suck.
I drove fresh Toyo RA1's to a track once, 1:30 drive. I switched to streets to get home though. I used to drive A032R's to autocrosses, until I figured out that they suck at autocrosses.
Another thing to consider, you may encounter weather on the way home. Plus, in my limited experience, R compound tires like to pick up nails and **** really quickly (I put one through a Toyo RA1 going from the track to hotel once... that sucked!)
I vote get streets, but if you have a full tread R compound that has never been heat cycled, use it on the way to the track and use streets coming home.
p.s. A032R I wouldn't feel too bad with... but you might as well get Azenis, Z211's or Kumho MX at that point.

Yeah I wouldn't want to drive any distance on a flatspotted/corded R compound. These things DO fall apart.

I drove a set of those to, from and around the first ITR Expo from the East coast (while using some R4 race pads).
It really depends on luck as much as tire choice, alignment, etc.

I'm guessing, that was the last time you used those on the street?

Nope, did a few sets of those ... starting with some R4Es.
I did spend at least a full day cleaning/rubbing the brake dust off the car and rims, though! hehe
Ask Lance about VTECinc up some of the switchbacks in CA when we got lost on a canyon run ... fun times for sure.

I Drove my RA-1's and A032r's back and forth to the track and never had any wear issues. Its about a 45min drive one way. I no longer drive R compounds to the track since I started picking up nails and didnt feel comfortable tracking plugged tires.
A032Rs are harder compound than RA1s and are daily driveable - you just won't get a ton of mileage on them. They are also good in the rain.
RA1s are good in the rain too - even when low on tread.

i drive to the local tracks (30-45 min) on my r compounds and brakes.
drinking beers while changing brakes and tires night before has become quite the tradition for me
and for those worried about picking up foreign objects in their tires, i lost a new R compound last year to a nail that i picked up ON TRACK

this is true, however im seeing more people getting longer track life out of the toyos. once those advans get alot of heat cycles in them they turn hard as hell.
toyos ive seen many times run till corded. ive got both sets of tires right now and would probably lean towards the advans when new. however given 3 track days on both, the toyos get stick icky icky!

I daily drive my Bridgestone Potenza RE540S R-compounds. Works great! Last year I got 5-6 trackdays and about 12000km out of them. Not bad. Works great in all conditions, even heavy rain. Rules at the track as well
. Hunting Porches on regular tires is fun
.
I also bought a set of Yokohama Advan 048R. They were definatly not streetable. Very noisy, very nervous on worn down tarmac and lasted only 4000km. Great grip though.

In Canada, insurance is getting to be such a PITA, they might deny you coverage if you get into an accident on the way to/from the track and they find out your using competition tires on a public road.

I drove home and back (about 10-12 miles) after the first day of a 2 day autocross once on a set of Hoosiers, but I'd never do it again -- roads are absolute garbage around here with all the potholes & loose gravel/broken concrete everywhere.
