Default check engine 5th gen

I have a 2000 Prelude. My check engine light came on about a week ago, i figured out it was the o2 sensor and changed that, but the check engine light stayed on....meaning i had to clear it from the system...can having the check engine light on slow your performance due to being in a safety mode?

Vtec will not engage so yes it does affect performance. have you tried checking the code? if you don't want to take it to a shop you can use a piece of wire. search for how to do it. i would show where the port is but i have no digital camera. also there should be a list of the codes and what they mean on here too. if you don't find it i will explain later when i have more time.

reset your engine light by taking off the negative battery cable for a little while, then put it back on and see if it comes back on....

There is a picture of the service connector on the link, it also gives you some MIL codes.

Yeah having the check engine light on can greatly reduce the take off on your car. That means no racing for you. Just go to your local autozone and have it cleared off by them and if it comes on again than you have a problem.
