sh!t..what do i do about paint running?

****..what do i do about paint running?
i just painted some tails red. it was fine until i applied the clearcoat. i tried to give it a glossy look, instead the paint started to run. is there any way to get rid of the run, like wetsand the clearcoat or something, or do i need to start all over?
