when they're real bad the vibrations from the motor are pronounced inside the car.

otherwise you could notice excessive torqueing of the motor when it's revved.

If you ever dyno your car, you will know what Jesse is talking about. You can see the engine moving when you are reving up the engine.

Rev the car when you're under the hood, you'll see the motor rocking forward and back with the revs. The stock mounts are rubber and sort of soft so a good amount of movement is noticeable. As they weaken, they will rock more.

Also forgot to mention, look for cracking or tearing within the rubber. That's clear indication for replacement.

An engine lift makes things much easier,

but if you're crafty, a good floor jack and extra hands would work also, just more difficult.

Replacing the mounts are easy since it only involves a bolt. Getting to them and lining up the motor to the mount is the tricky part.

I'd also like to add that if your shift lever moves alot when u let off the gas while you are drivng, its also a good sign that your mounts are bad...

You can pull the splash shield off the underside of the front bumper and take a look at the motor mounts. Last time I did this, I noticed that both of my front lower mounts were split.
