I found a type R at auction which I suspect has a blown engine.
Can someone tell me how much a new block from the factory would cost approximately .....
lets assume the tranny is still good, and possible head damage
Thanks

Not sure about you.....
but why not try calling your local Honda dealer?
seems like a pretty good start? Especially since you are all the way in Australia.

Why wiould you waste your money buying from honda? I hope when you say block, you mean bare block because you can't purchase complete engines from honda. a bare block would be 2k

Because he can buy a completely fresh complete(not bare) shortblock from them for ~2k if I remember right... PM Len.
He gets a nice fresh everything for his bottom end... its worth the money if you don't want to mod and just want the guarantee that its minty fresh and reliable.

Where can you get it for 4 grand, and aren't the only startup warrenties?

Haha comparing a $4K used beaten swap to a brand new never used shortblock from Honda for $2K, thats funny. If you're going to build it, get a bare block thats had a sleeve cracked, get it re-sleeved and build a monster. Otherwise I wouldnt throw away money on a used and beaten, sitting for 3 months on a boat with only God knows how many miles on it, motor.

I have seen them go for 4k a couple times...thats a pretty rare find though, and Stein is correct about them only having startup warranties. In fact most require that you start the motor within a limited period of time, or else your warranty voids.

This may not specifically answer your question, though in my paperwork I have the dealer invoices for a new engine and transmission.
Engine (bottom end) : $3,720.80
Engine (top end) : $2,423.60
Transimission :$2,850.97
Engine Gasket Kit : $247.07
These prices exclude tax and are pretty current.

list is 2330, buy it from Carland Acura for 1,980 (bottom end). Brando, those prices are pretty darn high, where did you buy that stuff from?
i bought my shortblock from honda for 1800. it depends how close you are to the engine, if it comes to acura/honda via japan, it costs bank. if its in the states, between 1800 and 2200 i would think.
Why buy a stock block for $2000 when you can get a block from DART for $2000.
"We engineered the new Dart aluminum Honda block to solve the shortcomings of production blocks used in high-performance and competition applications. We offer the Dart block in B18 and B20 versions. Both are built to withstand the extreme cylinder pressures created by turbochargers and nitrous oxide injection. We increased wall thicknesses in all critical areas and beefed up the bottom end with steel main bearing caps. Best of all, Dart blocks are compatible with production Honda cylinder heads, internal components and accessories. We added the features that sport compact racers and performance enthusiasts need to build powerful and reliable engines."

because the Dart block includes NOTHING.. just the Block. The Shortblock from Acura includes important stuff like the crank, bearings, connecting rods and pistons, all assembled and everything..

I personally didn't buy those parts. This was the paperwork given to me along with the purchase of my 97, incase I ever needed it for insurance reasons. Also, since my engine was fresh and just installed when I picked up my car, I needed the paperwork incase a cop decided to run the vin off the engine. Since it will automatically not match, I needed documentation from the seller that proved the engine was purchased from a dealership.

ah ok, makes sense. question for you since you would probably know, is that paint that is on the block stamp easy to take off if you wanted to? i mean there is no real reason to have it there right?

I'm just going to guess on some AU pricing for the motor based on my gearbox enquiries. I wouldn't be surprised if it's $6000-8000.
Keep in mind a new gearbox is listed at ~$6000, synchros are $400+, and little misc. parts are generally twice the US rrp you see.
Therefore, if possible, get the parts elsewhere.

Just got a quote from Honda, they quoted me 7,100 for a short block and 2800 for the head, and they aren't sure if that includes the entire head...
Hmmm i wonder if its cheaper to order one from the US and have it shipped here....

I wish you guys were a little more clear. When your quoting these prices, it might be a good idea to mention whether it's an assembled bottom end or just a bare bottom end.
As far as I know, they don't sell assembled bottom ends.
