Getting a new key made + a funny story!
Hey all, I've searched around and can't find an answer to my specific situation. Here's the long story,
I got rid of my CRX on a straight swap for a 1989 Turbo Supra. The CRX is pretty well modded, engine swapped, LSD, full suspension, setup for autox mainly. It's a cool little car, and it was a fun project. Needless to say, it was a no-brainer to swap for the supra! (in my mind anyway) Well, last week I got a funny letter from the State Police saying that it had been impounded, and that I was the listed owner/title holder. It turns out that the punk I traded with never bothered to title the car, or to get the plates changed, so it's still technically mine. On the 13th of March it was picked up off the freeway about 50 miles from here with a flat tire.
Sooo, I'm going to get it from impound tomorrow! I called the kid several times, but he hasn't answered or returned my calls. I figure, worst case scenario, I foot the bill for the impound and make him pay me a few hundred on top of that for my trouble. Best case, he disappears, I apply for a new title, and the car becomes mine again. If that happens, I'm just gonna sell it and put some $$ towards the soop! Anyone have any experiences like that, or know if there are laws that deal with this situation? Here in Kentucky, the car gets auctioned and the title goes back to the state after 60 days of impound. I figure on the 61st day it becomes mine, and that I "bought" it for the impound fees. I'm not gonna try to screw the kid, but so far he's left it in impound for over 2 weeks. He knows where I live, he's been to my house, so even if he lost my number or something, he should be able to find me. I sure would be if it was my car in impound.
The only problem is gonna be that I don't have a key anymore. Is there a way to get Honda to make me a new key? I've heard that there is a code printed somewhere that tells a locksmith how to make a new key from scratch... Anyone know?

What are you loosing besides a couple hundred bucks, which he will have to pay YOU to get his car back (maybe more if you wish).
And if not, you will have to pay that amount to buy back your CRX

Well, I got it out of impound today, looks fine, other than that the VAFC is gone, and the exhaust is broken off and completely missing just about where the test pipe ended... (there was a test pipe welded in). The tires are also thrashed (that's why it was left on the road, the driver's front tire was totally blown). The front bumper's a little jacked, and it looks like the oil hasn't been changed in the 4 months since we swapped.
I doubt the car is hot or anything, I just think that the schmuck didn't want to spend the $$...
The title was still in the glovebox, signed and notarized, so I'm getting a new one printed monday. I'm sending him a letter to let him know that he can either let me have the car, or he can pay me $1500 to get it back, considering the $500 i paid to get it out of impound, the 5 hours I took going to get it, the cost of gas, the stinkin 200 mile drive, etc. Also, I ended up having to pay back taxes on the supra because he hadn't paid last year's taxes, so I'm charging him for that too. All I can say is, if you sell a car, take your plates off it. I thought I'd be cool and let him keep the plates until he got it registered, but that wasn't a good idea. Luckily, it's turned out ok, but could have been REALLY bad!
