What could be damaged?
Hey guys, I drive a 96 LS. I took it to the track today and made a mistake. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but when I shifted from 3rd to 4th my rpm's shot up quickly. I'm positive it was in gear, but it dipped all the way to roughly 8200 rpm's. I don't know what happened and it happened so quickly, before I could get a chance to let off the gas.
My questions are: What kind of damage could I have done? Is it a pretty serious situation? How expensive is it going to be to repair?
The car is driving fine now. It doesn't seem to be making any weird noises, and still runs the way it did before.
A friend said that I could have bent some valves. If that is the case, how dangerous is it to drive around with a few bent valves. Am I causing any major damage to the motor?
I know its long, but if anyone can help I appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

what he said. if it's still runnin the same as before, you probably got lucky and it's ok. but if weird noises start soon, get that **** fixed quick...bent valves aren't good to ride around on.

Are you sure you didn't grap 2nd instead of 4th? I'm guilty of that myself. If it's broke, you'll know it real quick. I broke an engine mount the last time I did that.

haha, I'v done that so many times when I was learning to drive my 87ls, 5speed
I would always, shifting from fourth to fith, instead I would go from fourth to third, Wow would that car jerk, lol

Is that the only thing thats probably damaged? the valves? If so, what other problems can it create by driving around with a bent valve?

i dont think sumthin is wrong wit ur car, like u said the car still run just fine the way it was.. ur lucky u didnt break ur internals when u red line ur LS like an R
.. next time be careful dont redline ur car up high like that like wut everyone said u might break ur valves, valve spring, pistons, piston ring, or maybe the whole valvetrain.. just my advise if u hear some knocking noise from ur engine take it to the shop that might be sumthin serious after red lining it up high.... ( ur car is an LS not an R )
Driving ur car around with a bent valves can cause some serious and big trouble. so ill say its not a gud idea at all to drive ur car wit a bent valves.

yea dude you prolly misshifted, i it had poped outta gear the rev limiter would caught it, but yea if it runs as it did then your fine....just listen out for any strange noises. also, ridin around on a bent valve after awhile the valve will eventually break

if u have a rev limiter ur fine.. if u took it off with a chip then id still say ur good to go... im getting rid of my car so i rev the **** out of it and it still drives fine

but if that is the case, shouldn't i be worried? because i was at redline of third when i shifted. it's still running fine but i am really paranoid.

A lot of strain is endured on the drive train during such a maneuver. Since the center of gravity shifts forward, you instantly have much more traction than if you were acellerating. What I'm getting at is if you haven't ripped an engine mount or axle, then you're good to go.
When an engine is over revved 99 percent of the time the valve train will fail before anything else does. If it still idles fine, doesn't smoke, and doesn't spit and sputter, then you have not introduced your valves and pistons to each other and you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

if you have valve tap its a sign, but that could also mean your valves need adjusting, so before you freak out because you think you have a bent valve adjust you clearances and if the noise doesn go away, then explore further into the head
