Default AL wings. When is it rice and when is it nice?

I've been seeing alot of aluminium wings lately (f&f) and it's altogether called rice.
but then i saw another thread where the h&r wing was suppose to be funcationable.

so when is the wing rice and when is it nice? what shows which is a functioning wing and when it is a picnic table?

btw, i hate them anywayz so i wouldn't get one.. i just don't want to be making fun of the wrong car.

But, in my opinion, even if you do have this big functional wing, and all you do is drive your car on the streets with a load of friends in the back there is still something wrong with that...

By function, I mean using a functional wing.

I would laugh at people who have HPM wings but never track their car.

its your car do what makes you happy, I hate some people, i call them sheep, that only do something because they want acceptance from a certain group. If I liked allzetta's and chrome rims, and big spoilers I would have them.

but the idea of people asking I like this for my car, but wont get it if its rice, is just mind-boggiling to me. Do what you want. the only person you sould care about making happy is yourself,

If everybody did exactly what only they wanted, with no thought of what others would think or do - it would be mayhem... (I'm talking big picture here)

Nice:

This is wing is functional on this car or any RWD car for which it is providing downforce. IMO, an aluminum wing on ANY FF car is rice. It serves no function in providing performance for a FF car.

WORD! This is the truth, believe it!

Ask 100 people if something is nice.... All 100 will NEVER agree. YOU are the only one that matters.

Tell that to Spoon and Mugen, and see what they say.

doesn't the wing give the rear more down force soo in a hard turn, the back doesn't swing around?

yeah really....or tell that to any ITR owner who has driven a track without the wing, Jason AKA Darth VadeR comes to mind. he said there is a major difference with and without the wing...and that wingless on the track is not something he'd recommend. The ITR's *** is so loose that bigger wings help keep it planted.

There are a TON of FF race cars out there in some big series using a wing - I doubt they have a budget for "rice" expenditures...

downforce wings only works on high speed sraightways, doesnt work on 65mph speed limit

Gee....I guess a wing like this serves no purpose at all....and all the FF cars in Japan that run/ran in JTCC and that the new generation continue to run in Super Taikyu put them on to advertise or wait.....they must really use them to add weight or maybe use them as a rear mounted ballast.....

I wonder if it has anything to do with speed and the ability to keep the rear end planted during high speed sweepers?

Nah..... it's just for show..... just like the stock wing.....

Congradulations on admitting that you never track your Type R

You try late braking from 130mph to 55mph and let's see what your car does. Wings on fwd are not for mid corner. They are not for straight line (they slow you down in a straight line). They are for braking!

I'm taking off my GSR wing and buying/making a detachable rear wing like that. This way I can look clean off the track and drive mean on the track! I'm also taking it to a few shops to add some downforce to the front with as little drag as I can get.

I'm sure someone far more knowledgeable about aerodynamics will pipe in eventually but ...

Spoilers/wings and airdams/splitters are designed for specific purposes (at least the race types). Powerful rear wheel/all wheel drive cars would want more downforce since they have the hp/torque to compensate for the drag created by these wings. But the main reason for spoilers and splitters on low horsepower cars is to combat lift. They don't create that much drag but they will reduce lift significantly.

Get the Mugen ITR wing...not sure where the holes for a GS-R spoiler are, but the Mugen wing goes right into the holes for the OEM ITR wing. It looks really clean, not like one of those huge aluminum wings that clashes with the car. Plus, it's adjustable. I just put one on and it looks awesome.

So tell me how a wing helps with braking. I'm guessing that you are talking about the nose diving and the rear trying to climb over your shoulders. I can see that changing the attitude of the spoiler, in effect, flattening it into the airstream. I just understand the ITR spoiler reduce drag by keeping the airstream flowing instead of swirling. (Do note, that I'm no aerodynamics engineer, but I have slept at a Holiday Inn!) Basically, I've just never once heard anything about a wing helping in braking, so I guess I'm looking for hard evidence.

All of you people who don't believe in wings helping need to get your car out on a track. Under braking the rear end of the car gets light due to weight transfer. Anything to combat the produced lift is a plus in my book.

When you're braking at a track, you want to shed speed in a straight line, and gradually let off the brake as you start of the corner (trail braking). The front of the car is significantly loaded vs. the rear due to shift in balance when you brake, which means you've got a ton more traction up front than you do in the rear. This means oversteer, which at low speeds is easy to correct and sometimes to your advantage. At high speeds having a car that wants to oversteer badly is frightening. A wing helps keep the rear planted at speed, offering a great deal of stability for the weight used by the wing. Adjustable aero stuff lets you play with the handling balance of the car at the track. Adjustable aero stuff (or big wings in general) are completely useless on the street, so what's rice on one car is a valuable tool on a real race car.

well isn't that why people rice their cars? to make it look like a real race car?
