who do you use? I shipped a damn shift boot once through UPS and it was $12. I ship a heavy *** turbo through USPS and it is $20 with insurance and tracking number. So I ONLY ship USPS unless I slack on getting something out then I will ship UPS because they are open Saturday

the best way to really save money is to have UPS pick up packages at your house, that way you can fudge the weight/size. You can get buy with more than you think (I work for ups). Also, if you ever ship wheels, tires, or anything big through ups wrap cardboard around them somehow. If the tires or whatever don't have a box then you get charged 7 bucks for a handling fee for an unboxed item. So no matter how crappy it looks, make some sort of makeshift cardboard cover.

I don't really see how it cost you that much, doesnt make sense. I shipped a b series transmission to germany or somewhere and it was only 60 bucks USPS. Woulda been 130 or more UPS.

i've shipped two sets of wheels and both times i used different approaches. the first time i put the wheels in two separate large boxes and filled them up with styrofoam peanuts. that method ended up costing me almost $200 (from va to cali) via UPS. when i was in NY several months ago, i bought a set of rims and sent them for $60 via FedEx. This time i made 'sandwiches' with the wheels and several layers of carboard cut in circles. I put the circles on the fronts and backs of the wheels (laying old t-shirts on the faces to prevent scratching). i used a roll of packing tape per wheel so they were sealed nicely. the tire treads were exposed but under the tape, but there was no need for padding or cardboard there obviously. i read about this method here on h-t and i definitely think it saved me a lot of money the 2nd time around.

as a general rule for shipping, if the item is heavy or oversized, used FedEx, UPS, or DHL; especially since they include insurance up to $100. USPS is better priced for cheaper and smaller items.
