Default Exhaust silencers: Do they reduce HP?

And if they do... by how much? Has anyone tried DYNO'ing a car with and without a silencer?

Thanks.

well exhaust systems themselves barely increase power.. and it should depend on your other mods. im pretty sure a silencer wont do much. if im wrong. please flame me. =D

i believe it would because it restricts airflow ...im pretty shure it wont do much if u dont have many upgrades....

Yeah, well I'm looking into exhausts, and I really like the looks of the 5Zigen Fireball but I always have shrugged at the thought of mufflers that have silencers... I know I won't notice in a i/h/hondata setup if there is any performance loss... but I can't help but think that if the sound is being reduced by so many decibles... that must mean something else is restricting the air flow...

I know you can take the silencer out, but I prefer a quieter muffler.

I'm such a nub.

Thanks for your reply.

I have T1R SPL set up and I love the fact that I can make my exhaust quiet with the silencer. Especially when you're driving past 1-2am, you don't want to get pulled over by local Police.

Yes, they do I'v seen a couple dynos where they lose about 5 whp.

Both instances were on a dc5 k20a2 motor.

If you like the look of an N1 type muffler but want a quiet setup, just go axle back on your OEM Type S midpipe. I used to have a Spoon N1 axle back and it was pretty quiet, but with a straight mid pipe it booms.

I agree with a post above saying unless you have other mods, cat-backs add only modest WHP. When I was running a Tanabe Hyper Medallion cat-back it dyno'd less than 1 WHP less than another K20A3 auto running a Tanabe Racing Medallion.

Yes it will restrict horsepower. IF your gonna race, remove the silencer. IF you wanna cruise the streets, pop her in.

yes they do reduce HP. it blocks off the air flow of your exhaust.
