Default Automatic wont shift from park

So heres the story, first off this isent my car im helping someone out with it. He has a 2000 Civic and the car wont let you shift out of park, you have to stick a key or something in the slot to override the solinoide holding the shifter in park. I dont hear a relay clicking anywhere in the car like i was told. (Should be on the stearing colum?)

If someone could tell me where this relay is and what to check for I would apreciate it!
Thanks in advance...

if i'm not mistaken, the shift solenoid is under the center console at the bottom of the gear selector assy. thats how it was on my wife's old car(non honda ) but i think it's the same on most cars

I know that but im told theres a relay under the dash that controls that solenoid.

Basicly i need to know how that system works so ill know how to trouble shoot it, If someone else has had the same proplem and im sure there has been, Help would be apreciated.

I normally work on manual transmission cars so this isent my specialty.....

have someone verify your tailights come on (while you press the pedal) to check for a functioning brake switch...probably the most common problem with shift lock issues

I had my brake switch go out. This sucks b/c you don't have brake lights then.

Just pull the shifter console cover and tape the solenoid down, that took care of it for me, until I got a new brake sensor.
