Default Help setting timing on a 89 CRX w/ PR3 B16

I know you are supposed to jump the service connector to set the timing, however, when I do it, there is no change in the timing whatsoever. It was my belief that jumping the service connecter bypasses the ECU timing and allows you to set the base timing via the distributor. Anyone have any ideas why jumping the connector has no effect on the timing? Does it work the same way with the B16a swap? Seems like it did when I initially did the swap.

I can get red lined up, but the cap is almost fully retarded.

I too have noticed that jumping the connector has no effect (or so little that i cant notice) on setting base timing. About the red line being lined up, check your cam timing (especially the intake cam). See if its off. You sure you dont mean fully advanced position?

just double checked cam timing and crank position. Both check ok, however, these are new Skunk2 cam gears, so I'm assuming the dot is UP. Both gears are zeroed. I'm pretty sure it's fully retarded, distributor is rotated towards the radiator.

So you think just setting it to the Red at idle, fully warmed will be ok, regardless of the apparent ineffectivess of the service jumper?

I trying doing the timing today and I noticed that when I connected the jumper the car bogged and almost died but the timing was still the same, even after turning the car off after connecting the jumper.

Post a pic of the sprockets lined up at TDC if u can. With the OEM sprockets, when it says UP, they arent exactly in the most UP position, so it can be misleading. Like i said, jumping the service connector seemed to make zero difference when i set timing on my old ZC and my obd-1 b17. And yes, u are correct about the dizzys position in that its retarded (no pun intended).

And YES to the last question. Just to be safe tho, jump the connector and set your timing.
