VTEC Question? When should it turn on?
My Vtec turns on and lets go at different points in the powerband. Usually at 5k you can hear it switch on, but sometimes it kicks on early and turns off late. Has anybody heard of anything like this before?
vtec engages at 4400rpms. the secondary butterflies open at about 5600rpms. alot of times people mistake the secondary openers to be the "vtec sound"
also, if your motor is not warmed up all the way, sometimes it kicks in late.

It all depends on the engine and whether or not you are using a different ECU.
If you have a STOCK B18C1 with STOCK ECU. Then VTEC will engage at WOT at 4400 and the secondary intake runners open at 6000 RPMs. It is very hard to hear the VTEC engage, the secondaries, however, are much louder.

Other way around, the Secondaries open up at 4400 in the Intake Manifold and then VTEC engages around 5600-6000 RPMS.
Once again.
VTEC is not set at any RPM.
It will engage as need. Lowest engagement point is 4400 rpm. (heavy load on motor, heavy throttle, enougt oil pressure, normal temp. and so on...
I have had VTEC engage as late as 5400 rpm. Down hill almost no throttle.
Scrondaries open at about 5700 rpm.
So there is nothing worng with your car.
