Hey folks, I was after a spot of advice.

My stock clutch looks like it's given up the ghost after around 65,000 miles, I have a 99 Civic Si, Type-R Intake/exhaust manifold, ITR cams and lowered compression. I have seen some really good deals on the ACT 6 puck clutch with 12lb flywheel and uprated pressure plate.

My question, is this a bit overkill for my application ? whats the feel of the pedal like ? to be honest a bit harder than stock with a bit more feel would be great, the stock clutch never felt that great anyways. Also, I'm looking at around 250whp later on this year, probably some sort of turbo setup, I am assuming this clutch would cope (although I couldn't tell you the sort of torque numbers the turbo kit could potentially put out).

I have searched a few different links but nothing really answers my question one way or the other.

If the above is a bit OTT, anyone got any other suggestions, I looked at Exedy, but I don't like the idea of clutch chatter so much, which I have heard is quite a common problem with that clutch, I have enough rattles, I sure as hell don't need any more

i think that a HD/SS would be great for your setup. since my bad time with my CM stage 4, i have liked RPS and will be giving them a try. but i think an HD/SS will do you fine. thats a heavy duty pressure plate with a street strip disc.

 

Mucho overkill. You're stressing your drivetrain for no reason.

 

The solid hub 6-puck will kill your tranny with the harsh engagement it has. XTSS level clutches are good for turbo applications and take a beating.

 

Is it a sprung or unsprung 6 puck? unsprung is gonna be a pain to drive in a daily driver and expect some chatter.

 

ACT only makes UNSPRUNG ceramic puck discs. They sprung discs aren't supposed to be released until the end of summer.

I don't see why he needs this extreme of a setup anyway. He probally doesn't make 20 hp over what he did stock unless I've missed a major part of his setup. If his clutch gave up 65k into it, somethings very wrong. I've been at 8-10 psi on a Y7 with the stock clutch at 130k for almost 2 years with no problems.

 

Probably a HDOO (stock replacement) would work just fine. I just like to have room for upgrades later. So a HDSS is a good compromise.

 

i have the ACT HDSS setup with Fidanza lightweight flywheel, with I/H/E/TestPipe
and its more than sufficient. The HDSS clutch pedal is significantly harder to press over stock, Feels more like a V8 clutch.
If you get the 6 puck, your gonna have mad chatter and it won't be very streetable.

 

Has anyone ever driven an STI....i wonder what clutch system they have i would love to find a match to that in the aftermarket....

 

HDSS for dailydriving and some track. 6puck is overkill IMHO, specially if you take your car to work everyday and have to sit in traffic

 

Heya folks, firstly thanks a lot for the replies, I figured the 6 puck might be overkill, it's just the prices were very competetive but as some of you have mentioned, it looks like it shall end up doing more bad than it will good.

As for my clutch giving up at 65,000 , well it's still got a bit of life left in it, but to be honest I don't think it's been right since I had it, and I brought the car at 30,000 miles 2 years ago, I've blead the system twice to try and get rid of what i can only describe as the engagement point moving (weird I know), but the problem appears to be still there so that will get investigated throughly before I fit the new one.

The ACT HDSS looks a like more sensible, I shall enquire and see what sort of prices I can get for a new one.

The only thing I missed off my setup was a de-cat pipe and an apexi n1 exhaust, oh and an ITG panel filter with the resonator gutted to try help things breath a little better.

I read the HDSS can handle 243lb of torque, I doubt any turbo kit I spec will put out enough to worry that, so it looks like that one shall be my choice.

Just the LSD to get and thats the transmission nightmare out the way
