not too long ago I bought my second crx,a 1990 crx si and I had my mind set on a b20z swap in order to have a FUN, low mileage motor...
A friend of mine though offered me his b18a motor with tranny for 400$. I mentioned this to a few other friends and everyone is saying to jump on it because a b20z swap is way more expensive while I could pull off the b18a swap for 1500 or less since I will do the labor myself. Problem is,they've never done a b18 swap,I would like to hear it from someone who has actually DONE the swap.
For the b20z swap,I'd end up using pretty much everything from a b18a anyways beside the longblock of course,so a b20z swap would only be more expensive in terms of how much more I'd pay for the b20 block and the obd-1 conversion, everyhing else would be just about the same.
Foot Notes: Can you really pull off a b18a swap for 1500 or less if u get the motor/tranny for 400? Is a b20z swap really a lot more costly in comparison?
I've searched,I've browsed websites,I've added up costs, but I'd like to hear it from someone with actual hands on experience, thanks

Well im not sure but it should be the same but i did a B18b1 swap, and ur gona need
mounts-$400(i used hasport)
shiftlinkage-$150
drivers side bracket-$30(salvage yard special
)
rear mount bracket-$60
4 wire sensor-$100
non obd to obd-1 conversion harness-$120
obd-1 ecu-$150
90-93 teg axles-$200
90-93 intermediate shaft-$100(used) brand new are like$280
Thats all i could think of right now but thats already $1310 on just **** that u need. so add $400 to that thats $1710 you'll probably spend about $2000total on this swap if you do it yourself. But think about it this way, just add $1300 to the B20z swap which will probably be more. I'd just go with the LS

what is the drivers side bracket for?... i know you need the one in the back from a 90-93 teg. all of that sounds about right but you wouldn't have to do the conversion, you could still run obd0 if you want to save money. if you call up hmotorsonline they will sell you the mounts and linkage a little cheaper than listed above... ohh and if you do the b20 you also have to get the cable to hydro conversion if you are going to run the b20 trany.

$400 is not a bad price. Of course, I don't know how much these motors go for where you live. But you could pay almost $400 for just the transmission alone here in CA. So you might want to consider buying it. And if you don't want to do a B18A swap (and a B18A is quite a bit weaker than a B20Z!), you could always sell just the complete motor with ECU to get cash to buy a B20Z.
Speaking of using B18A parts on a B20Z, there really is not much you would want to use. The B18A intake manifold has smaller runners than the intake ports on the B20Z. So although it will bolt to the block, it is not a good choice. Furthermore, a 1990-1991 PR4 is not a good ECU choice (the 1994-1995 P75 is MUCH better).
As far as pulling the B18 swap off for less than $1500, this is certainly possible if you can get the swap for $400 and do the install yourself.

oh? didn't get anything
I found a b-series shift linkage for 88-91 crx's from avid racing for only a 100 here on ht and hcp mounts for a 100,so it seems if I just shop around,I can definetly pull this off. My rex has 250,000 miles on the d16a so I just wanted to swap out a y8 or something before the motor takes a poop on me,but I figured if I can pull off the b18a for only 1500,why not go B-series while Im at it.
appreciate the help
