Default oil question

I bought oil by the bottles to do my oil change but haven't done it yet, I haven't opened the bottles in 3 months, does oil expire even though i didn't open the bottles?

i really dont think it does, i used to work at a quick lube and we had some stuff on the shelf that was left over from the 80's and we still were told to use it.

Once it's open & put in your engine it gets moisture, wear metals, & combustion products. That stuff makes it go bad in 6 or 12 months even if you store the car. That stuff doesn't happen to an unopened bottle of oil.

That's NOT good for today's engines...

i dont really know. it was havoline 10w40. the stupid hillbilly that managed the place told us to use all of it because he wanted to save money. I "borrowed" some and put it in my old clunker 86 ltd and it seemed to run fine.

brake fluid is hygroscopic ... actively absorbs moisture.

The same is not true of motor oil. It will store in its plastic bottles for years. Only when it's several years old would I not use it.

I've seen a car stored for over a year with the same oil in the sump. The oil was finally changed and a sample of the old oil was sent to a lab like this one:

Oil looked fine. Little wear or contamination.

Don't worry about it.
