Default ITR & GSR knife fight..

This weekend at a real large auto X i had an opportunity to compare a well modded GSR to my stone stock Type R.

Now i can not tell you how many times i have heard the line that a Type R is just a lighter GSR and that they are the same car.
After this weekend i beg to differ......
Since i am rather new to the Honda race scene i had no reason to doubt all of this and had an open mind about it.
Hell if i can take a GSR and bolt on type R suspension and brakes for half price i will...
This event was completely un planned we were both there and running these cars on the same day in the same conditions so the results should be reasonably accurate..

The GSR was a guy who A) really knows how to drive and all ways places well with tasteful mods ( all performance "0" rice). He runs in the used Honda class ( STS) which all ways seem to look like a Honda used car lot.
The GSR has the following; Koni's type R springs,AEM cold air, very light wheels and a good set of tires.
My R just had tires all the rest is stock.. (My R runs in D stock)

He had a run before i got in and i did a ride along with him and he drove the crap out of the car pulling out a series of low 86's and then a mid 85 sec pass.
I ran in the next run group and on my first botched run ran a 87 way off pace ( not the cars fault, i screwed up) my next run was a 84.2 which was still not up to par i left a huge amount of time out there. At the end of the day i pulled a 80.45 to his best time of 85.3 we traded off ride along's all day and after his first ride he plainly got out and stated his GSR was a piece of crap.. Quote" after all of the time i have spent testing and tuning my car is not even close to what your stock car is " After my first ride along with him i was at the same conclusion. I had planned to buy and build up a GSR to road race but after today there is just no way i would handicap my self that way.
At the end of the day the club we were there with offered the track to us for some timed fun runs.
While he did not beat my best time with more time in the car i believe he would... I could not even drive his car it pushed, over steered etc..
I could not pick a good line to run because the car just could not do it.. I tired to run the line that i pulled my 80 on but the car just couldn't do it.. So in conclusion i do not believe that i will be buying any GSR's except as a daily driver to take the heat off of my R.
Now i do realize that this is only one GSR and one Type R so your results my vary...

My results have varied.

My times in my GS-R were 2+ seconds faster than a ITR with about the same mods (he had different spring rates, but better tires). I was driving both cars for those times, his times were 4-5 seconds behind my car. However I guarantee that if I drove that ITR for another 3-4 laps it would have buried my GS-R's times. This was on a mid-high 50 second course.

The ITR with the same work done to it, or stock vs stock is simply a faster car. That's not news or anything

I'll let those ITR owners on here that I've autocrossed against talk about their slow times

It was for me but it truly felt like a diffrent car..

Of course we both got out butts handed to us by a GREAT driver in a 88 Civic Si in STS... With a mere time of 74.6 crap......

No LSD in the GSR's sucks The GSR probably could've done better (maybe not beat you but at least do better) if he upgraded from the puny 14mm rear swaybar too.

lol yeah I had a 22mm rear bar for my GS-R before I actually picked up the car. It was swapped with 50 miles on the car.. I didn't autocross it until 900 or so miles though. My old 93HP of fury Isuzu truck was more fun to autocross.

if he doesn't have a limited slip, some weight reduction, bigger rear bar etc etc. this is what I would expect. Until he has the same HP, weight, suspension etc. then I do not see the relevance of this at all, because we all know the R will do better in this example, but thats not to say the gs-r is incompetent
