ignition upgrades
93' EX, stock save for a knockoff intake/muffler
Car has a small misfire at low throttle, low RPM conditions but pulls fine withmid to WOT; choppy idle as well (if only it was the cam that did that), even surges, but rarely. Just replaced cap and rotor friday (stock replacement), Accel thundersport wires 6 months old, NGK OEM plugs 3 months old...misfire problem remains. After searching, at this point, I'm close to sure its the coil (car does have 195k miles and its doubtful its ever been serviced with anything more than oil changes).
Unless you have other suggestions as to what the problem may be, instead of buying a standard OEM replacement coil (~$70), I'm considering going to an aftermarket high output coil like MSD (~$30) along with the conversion cap for external coil (~$35). My question, do I have to buy the MSD SCI ignition module to use that setup? If so, that defies the purpose of the price break with the aftermarket coil and I don't really have $200 to spend for HP ignition right now.

dont get an external coil you wont need it for a stock or slighly modified vehicle.
get the OEM one. but I would check the dwell on your ride to see if it is the ignition.
