Default Pinging = Timing or Fuelling?

Hi my timing is set to 16 degrees but my car still pings but only at high throttle at around 4000rpm to 5800rpm VTEC engagement point.

My question is if my timing is set too agressively (too advanced) would it ping under load all throughout the rev range? Or can it ping anywhere it wants at specific rpm?

I thought it was a fueling problem and i tried adding some fuel with my VAFC to that region but it didnt really work. Now i know the VAFC is not very good at adding fuel.

Now i dont really know if i have a fuelling problem or its my timing but surely it cant ping at 16 degrees BTDC.

My mods include:
JDM Gen 2 B16a - 10.7:1 Compression
Stock cams
2 layer headgasket
Ported & polished head
Bored throttle body
Short ram intake
4-2-1 header
2.25" mandrel bent exhaust with N1 muffler.
VAFC

Help

Pull your plugs, what do your electrodes look like?

Yeah i will check the plugs. But plugs dont really tell you if the timing is causing the pinging only the mixture right? And what if the car runs really rich in some rpm but lean at 4000rpm to before VTEC will you still be able to tell from the plugs if its rich or lean? Plugs just give you a general indication of your fuel mixtures right?

Stock timing on your motor will not cause you to ping. Are you using premium fuel? My buddy's stock '00 Si pings if he uses shitty fuel.

I use 98 octane fuel here in New Zealand which i believe is the equivalent to 91 in the states. Yeah im thinking its a fueling problem because i think that the ported and polished head increases the airflow significantly at that rpm. As i said before i have tried adding fuel with the VAFC with little success so i might have to invest an a fuel pressure regulator and up the fuel pressure a bit.

Thanks

Old School smartass wiseman say: Copper plugs are only "readable" plugs.....
Happy tuning.

check your plugs because they never lie.

toss on a wideband and check your afr through those RPMs
