Possible Detonation in 2001 V-6
Gentlemen, any help would be appreciated. I currently own a 2001 Accord V-6 auto. I have had the EGR service bulletin done along with the BG fuel system complete cleaning just for safe measure to reduce/remove any remaining carbon. The car has 78k and runs fine except.......
When I get in high gear WITH the converter locked up, if I get on the gas slightly but not enough to unlock the converter, I am hearing what sounds like valve rattle or spark knock.
I had the service department hook up the computer while driving and NO knocks were logged and no timing retard was done. I have a good ear to recognize this type of thing and I swear it sounds just like spark knock. For you Honda gurus and tech guys; am I hearing something else.
BTW, the fuel mileage is not what I expected so far. What should this car get on the highway?
Thanks in advance.

Have you checked/changed your plugs? ALso you may want to try some seafoam or pulling the EGR and cleaning it. As for gas milage I have not checked mine, but I normally get over 300 to a tank.
Thanks Redneck, I am going to get plugs this afternoon to try those. Question: the OEM plug is about $15. I used to run the copper V-power NGK in my 95 Accord. Now I realize that the OEM plugs are "supposed" to be good until about 100k. I think this is BS, for ANY plug. Is it ok for me to run the copper NGK (same type as I ran in my 95) in this V-6 just to see if the plugs could be the problem.
I have already had ALL of the EGR cleaned at the dealer with a "revised" EGR valve and new pipe installed. Then treated with BG. It's gotta be the plugs. Thanks.

I personally always have liked and used the ngk-r copper core plugs, they have always been great plugs for me and super cheap.
The only down side to going to the copper is you will need to change them more frequently than platinums.

Is it easy to access your EGR valve? My engine light is on and the code said there's something wrong with the EGR valve. I want to clean it out if it is not hard to get to. If someone can link me to a tutorial it would be great.
Hey guys, I changed the plugs with the Coppers and the car runs good, getting good mileage, but still makes a "top end" noise as described previously. It is not detonation as I had the dealership record / monitor the info from the OBDII port while driving. No knocks detected.
They acknowledge the noise, but say nothing's wrong. It must be the mechanical valve followers making a little noise under light throttle. What is strange is that it is only detectable when the converter is locked up. Any issues with the torque converters??
Thanks for the help, though.
