Default Autopsy on my engine, post theft-recovery

I finally dug into my engine tonight to check out the damage caused during the police chase when we caught the guy who stole my R. The good news: the head looks fine and the blower looks good. The bad news: there's a piece missing from piston #4.

The crank spins freely, so I'm hoping there's no other damage. The scars in cylinder #4 are pretty shallow and can be overbored no problem. Unfortunately, I really want to have a stock spec bottom end again, and the scarring is too deep for a hone. I'll drop the block and check out the underside later this week. For now, it looks like I'll end up selling my block to someone who's interested in boring it out.

What happened to the thief? Go to trial yet? Hope they give him a good ***-reaming in jail.

AFAIK the thief is still free. The warrant for his arrest was issued in December but I don't think the police have served it yet.

Jay had an interesting idea. If my block is fine but for the scarred cylinders, is it possible and then cost effective to weld in good cylinders from another oem block?

no way.

just overbore like .25 and you'll be straight.

you gain a little bit of displacement this way too.....

call me immature, but i would most definetly find the kid who stole your car and blew your motor up and beat the living **** out of him on a dark night with a few freinds and bats just in case they were needed. in my mind, somebody stealing my car deserves to get fucked up immensely. though many will disagree, i would feel a LOT better after doing so. Of course, I would rather watch the thief rot in prison.

glad you have the car back man, good luck!

So, have you sued this guy? Sue his insurance too. Lawyer up! Better than baseball bat justice.

I agree with Ken as far as the cylinders go. Then pick up 4 new lower comp over sized pistons and boost it even more. But I would be more worried about crank damage at this point and would inspect the hell out of it and take it to a machine shop before even worrying about the rebuild.

Thanks for the PM, Ken. My goal here is to duplicate my car's performance and reliability, not to improve it. For a number of reasons, maintaining Honda original parts is very important to me, even though some aftermarket parts are better. I do not plan to build a monstor motor and crank up the boost. I'm very happy with 7-8psi. I definitely plan to inspect the bottom end very closely, whether I keep the block or sell it.

Well you could hit him with a CIVIL suit in magistrate court; cost you maybe $100 bucks to file it yourself.

Sue him for the damages to your car. If he's a minor, you can sue his parents. I wouldn't let him off so easy.

He's 18, an adult. I'm still running a tab for damages to the R. The moment my damages are finalized, I'll file the civil action. I know a good lawyer, a real hard-hittin' sleazebag.

do you mind my asking, why do you not want to overbore? just a factory .25mm over?

A couple people have suggested a factory overbore. At first I wasn't too attracted to it, but I am starting to warm up to the idea. One thing, I'm not very knowledgeable about which oem pistons would be most appropriate for my setup. Search function will own me tonight.

Hey Jim. If you need any assistence I am free on Sat. and maybe Sun.

When you say "a piece is missing from piston #4", are we talking a small hole and did a valve possibly smack it? Anyhoo, call me later this week.

I might take you up on this weekend. Thankfully the valves look good. What broke off is a small piece of the piston, about 1/8" square that broke off the edge. It must be floating around in the block somewheres.
