Default replacing axle, got a question

Do you have to drain the tranny if you are replacing the passenger side axle? Do you have to drain it for an auto as well as a manual tranny? Also, when I replaced my driver side axle, i had to beat the **** out of it to get it in the hub and tranny, is this normal? Shouldnt they just slide in using hand power?

Also, will an oil plug crush washer work on the tranny plug?

no you don't have to drain the tranny fluid to change them out. And yes, sometimes it takes a little convincing to get them in line and installed

Depending on how level your car is, and how accurately its filled up, you shouldnt have to drain, no.
You should put some grease (high temp) or antisieze on the splines before putting them into where they belong. It helps when putting them in and again when removing them the next time.

The drain plug washer is the same as the oil drain washer, yes. The fill washer is quite a bit larger.

Hammer them in??? I did my D16 twice and now my new motor and I always slid them in by hand. Some time I had to move them around a bit, but no hammering needed.

it was more of a tap then hammer..
i just had to give it the extra bump to get the ring into the groove..

dang, i put a piece of wood against the hub and smacked the crap out of it to get it to go into the hub.

In what cases would you have to drain the tranny to replace axles? With b-series perhaps? Cause I know most ppl do drain their trannies when replacing axles.
