Default VTEC radiator

Once I decide to swap in my H22A4, I would also like to replace the radiator. This may sound dumb, but taking that risk...

Would I have to swap in a radiator from 98-99? Does it have to be a 'VTEC radiator' Or can it be the H23 type that is in there now? If it should be replaced with the non-VTEC type, could I use the VTEC type from 93-96, or should it match the engine type/year?

Any comments?

thanks!

so when they charge different prices for supposedly different radiators (non-VTEC vs. VTEC) there are no different connections or hose placements?

I meant all the 4th gen ones are the same... a 5th gen might be different, but I'd doubt it (unless one has metal end caps vs. plastic...)

just to double check, here are the part numbers:

4th gen 5-speed H23:
19010-P14-505

4th gen 5-speed H22A1:
19010-P14-505

5th gen 5-speed H22A4:
19010-P5M-013

so yes, 4th gen SI & VTEC are the same, but 5th gen has a different part number. Here is a picture of each:

5TH GEN:

4TH GEN:

looks a little different I guess?

5th gen radiators are different from the 4th Gens. H23 and H22 radiators are EXACTLY the same.

Exactly. Radiators aren't designed with just the engine in mind. It also depends on how it fits in each particular car body.

cool.

just want to make sure that the connections for the hoses are the same. One hose goes to the block and one to the head right? (Don't have my service manual with me...)

one goes to the back of the block, on the passenger side, behind the distributor, into the "thermostat housing".

The other goes into the head, on the front, just above the exhaust manifold.

um, are you doing this yourself?

I wish! I have a service manual and three other guys that have moderate experience with this kind of work. I am confident that we could all do together and I have a mechanic lined up as a back up if needed.

I did'nt read everything....

On the 5th Gen the radiators are made by two different vendors: Denso and Toyo.

The fans are specifci to each model, as are the raditator caps.

The commong problem is the plastic cracks eventually and leaks.

Modine makes a brass/copper replacement for the Desno unit (the more popular of the two) for $100.00 (for 4th and 5th gens alike).

Fluidyne makes the lightweight aftermarket aluminum units, and those are much more pricey.

I went with the Modine... it cools better than stock, but is a littl heavier.

I'd just use your 4th gen radiator until I needed a new one.

It is running fine, but am just worried about blowing a seal or hose or something due to the age....

my last lude blew a hose around 165,xxx so just a bit nervous

sort of related...: what about the other components (water pump, timing belt, tensioner, etc.) I realize they have to be VTEC, but again should I stay with 4th gen. VTEC parts, or use 5th gen. specific to the H22A4 engine?

Default H22 rad does not fit on H23 ?

I have bought a Koyo R1979 radiator (Fluidyne look-a-like) to replace my old stock rad before it died on me.
Problem #1 - the fan does not fit. brackets are not matching. No problem i could make some custom mounts
Problem #2 - the bottom is a bit too deep, as a result the fan bracket screws go below the corssmember where they get stuck
Problem #3 - the rad sits too far in the engine bay, about 4cm. It would have required custom brackets to hold it from above.
Problem #4 - the drain bolt sits just in front of the crossmember, not over the original one place. As a result i could not remove it while the rad was installed (this one was a show stopper)
Problem #5 - somewhat unrelated but the "ricer" hoses i got to replace my old original hoses do not match properly. The upper hose matches, but the lower hose has a different routing (not a biggie) and most importantly ends up too big a diameter on the engine block (thermostat housing), would have leaked like hell (2nd show stopper) - i suspect these hose are for the H22A

Result - the Koyo R1979 rad which is sold for H22A 4th gen preludes (the lower "pins" fit exactly the 4th gens) does NOT fit my euro H23A2. I'm lost about what to do now, i sell the rad on Ebay but i still need a new and nice rad (i often go at the track, 'road racing') - i know C&R make a H23 rad, is it the same as Koyo ?

interesting topic, but since we are on it... I have 2 preludes and neither of them have plastic topped radiators. Both are metal, so i am not sure if they are some sort of aftermarket. They both fit perfectly in the cars and look just like stock. But here is the kicker, i have seen a lot of prelude radiators and the core is pretty thin, well the one that was in my bone stock 92 blown h23 lude when i got it that was an inch thick if not thicker. I dont know if that is factory or not, but it is huge!! But hey, im not complaining!!
