Okay...let's talk MORE about tires for the Expo '02
I don't want to beat a dead horse on this tire subject...but I need some suggestions.
1) I currently own a set of stock RE10's on my stockers that have seen better days. I don't think I would dare put them on the track again. They could most likely get me TO the Expo and back safely.
2) I have a set of '95 MAZ-duh (Speedvision TC viewers will understand
)...anyway I have a set of BF Goodrich R1's mounted, BUT after my last track event one tire is starting to show a cord.
3) I have a set of 195/50 Pirelli P7000's in my garage with about 80% tread left (from my old Si wheels on my CRX HF)
4) I have a set of 205/50 Pirelli P700 Z's in my garage, BRAND NEW, never used or mounted.
Should I use one of these sets of tires...OR should I buy something else? Keep in mind I need to have some $$ for the Expo itself (plus I'm going to Vegas the next week after the Expo!
).
Should I look into getting a set of Falken Azenis? I hear so much about these tires, but are they better than what I've got (the two different kind of Pirellis?).
Thanks,
Todd

That's a lot of extra tires. I don't know what kind of track experience you have, but if I were you I'd burn up some of the Pirellis. It's not like you're going to win anything by going fast, and the driving principles are the same on any tire (give or take). It'll be fun either way, I'm sure (lucky bastard, oops, slipped
).
More garage space, more extra money, fewer decisions

It's a long story as to why I have so many tires.
I've been AutoXing for 2 yrs (won GS locally both years
) I've been to two roadcourse events. Both at the same course. I ran with the RE10's at both events, but switched to the Millenias w/ R1 race tires after one session with the RE10's.
I know I'm not really *racing* anyone...but I am somewhat competitive and don't want to be the slowest out there.

To me, the key question is this: Do you plan on buying more track tires in the near future ANYWAY (for more autocross and such)?
If no - then put one of your Pirelli sets on the Mazda wheels and bring them with you. You can drive either set on the track - the Pirellis or the RE010's. Either will be fine there. And you'll be able to get home afterwards.
If yes - then get a set of track tires now - whatever tire you want to use for autocross (R1, or A032R, or anything else you plan on using as a track tire). If you get more R1's, you KNOW you're going to need to replace more than just that one tire (since tires usually cord in pairs); may as well get a whole set now. You could get them all mounted... or, you have the option of mounting just the one tire to replace the corded one, and bringing the other three R1 tires with you, unmounted. If you cord another R1 on Monday, you could go get one mounted early Tuesday morning and then use it the rest of the day.
Also - I don't think you should be concerned about being the slowest one out there because of your equipment. I can guarantee you that the slowest driver in any run group is someone who is coming nowhere near the limits of his tires or car, but whose personal driving limits (and comfort zone) are what makes him slower than the others. And that's okay - it's not a race. What's important is only that the slowest driver is having just as much fun as everyone else.

nsxtcjr ~ I agree with what you posted. I really would like a new set of race tires...but I doubt my finances will allow it. Hmm...I do have a bonus coming up this next month, but I have no idea yet as to how *good* it's going to be. Maybe I'll just mount the 205/50 Pirelli P700 Z's to the Millenia wheels, then drive up on them (break them in a little)...but bring the stockers w/ balding RE10's with me... just in case.
The one tire that's showing a cord is part of a set of BF Goodrich R1's, which aren't for sale anymore. The BF G-Force R1's are the replacements, but I don't know how much they differ.
Believe me...I know and understand this isn't a race. I've been to two events like this before and I know what they're all about. Like I said, I just want to run well.
Plus, the stickies are SO much more fun.
