Buying a CRX - problemes to look out for???
What are the big problems to look out for when buying a rex. Besides the rust thats on a lot of ef's.
1. what does it mean when it says smogged B16? its this legal? or will i run into trouble when i get it?
2. whats the weakest part about a REX. i here the motors run strong if you take care of them so a "high" milage (over 100,000 miles) is not that big of deal?
3. Does a 6 footer fit in well? or do i have to work on my yoga to fold myself into one?
thanks, i just want to know what to look out for before i buy one, which hopefully i will soon!!!

the b16 passed smog, ask for papers on motor.

so its all good? because if i get a B16 rex, which i do then i dont want the cops to give me hassle. i know hondas are very clean as far as emissions go but i just dont want there to be leagle hiccups once i get my car. Has anyone bought a B series swapped EF and ran in to problems? (i mean stock not crazy bi-turbo drag cars)

if you buy a crx with a b16 in it just ask them if its bar'd. bar is legal, there should be a bar sticker on it with a code/number. that means they put the motor in and brought it to the state ref who ok'd everything.
smogged b16 just means they smogged it(illegally) and when it comes time to smog it you have to either illegal smog it($200+) or get it ref'd.
either way check if they motor is hot(stolen)
good luck finding a crx under 200k. under 150k is pretty good. well actually if you got motor the mileage on the body dont matter but still lower mileage means less wear and tear on the body and suspension and stuff.

It sounds like the seller is pushing a car that may NOT have been throught the state referee station making the engine swap illegal! Unless you are willing to face the process required to make it legal, pass on the car.
It's a "do-able" process (I've got a ref'd B18C in my 89 hatchback), but you NEED to know what you are facing. Research the process and what it takes and then use it to bargan on the selling price. As an example, if it doesn't have a P28 ECU, you will have to locate one and buy it.
Other than that, I'd check for rust. It's a bit more of a problem with the CRX's than the hatchbacks.

When i bought my first CRX years ago, i knew everything about them and what i could do with them months before buying one. All these ricers selling their CRX's on craigslist with swaps are never smogged unless they claim BAR.
I see ZC CRX's on classifieds and the guys are always claiming it's legal in CA...
Infact it's illegal for them to even sell the vehicle, and if you can't get it to pass smog - you must swap in a new (legal) engine. By CA law, you can go back to the seller and sue them for the cost of the D-series swap being done by a reputable shop because that's the only thing you can do to get it to pass smog legally.
I see OBD0 B-series CRX swaps in CA claiming the same.. legal status when they've just never been smogged with the new engine.
(I bought my CRX like this.. on purpose.. because i can avoid smog laws as well as anyone)
With a B-series you have an option- Go OBD1 and get the Swap REF'd (BAR'd) whatever you want to call it.
http://www.rywire.com sell OBD1 conversion packages all the time for this very reason.
Plus an added benefit, B16's run much better when OBD1 IMO
(chipped p28's rock)
Then there's the stolen parts issue.
If you EVER think a CRX is shady, get on the phone with 911 non-emergency and have them run the VIN# for you. If you ever think an engine is shady, get the engine code off the block, maybe someone submitted the # to police when it was stolen (i did when mine went missing) It will be in the police reports database, 911 operators don't search this unfortunately, a cop would have to.
Getting a screamin deal on the car so you don't want to call the cops and lose it?
Well you're going to anyway, the kid that i caught with all my parts could have done jail time despite succeeding in his claim that he bought everything on the street. - Don't let that happen to you, you'll be charged with a misdemeanor or worse, beaten within an inch of your life by the original owner.

dont pay more than 1500 for stock. and dont pay more than 2500 for modified(swap)
</TD></TR></TABLE>
Agree somewhat. But if you want to buy a good Swapped CRX - Don't pay more than $4200 for a BAR'd B16 and $5000 for a BAR'd GSR (thats assuming the car is mint)
For ricer trash, expect to have to replace suspension, retune the whole engine, probably rebuild the engine.. if they say they had NOS on it or anything like that.. don't buy it, rings are toast.

Im 6'2" and fit in my CRX "ok". I have less then 1" of headroom, although I sit 1 click from vertical (non-sunroof models have more headroom).

4200-5000 thats alot of money for a crx bar or not. basically bar aint that hard its just that you gotta make everything perfectly stock, then after you bar you;ll probly wanna modify it. its a big waste of time and money if you ask me. just low ball him and say smog cost alot. and about the stolen parts if it;s in hidden view who really gives a ****. I bought my car from a friend friend and had him put in the motor. but also got other ****, they probly all stolen, BUT THE MOTOR IS NOT DONT BE STUPID AND BUY A STOLEN MOTOR. what you can do is just get him to sign a paper that says the motor was in the car when he sold it.
but for me if there was a clean crx with stolen gsr motor for like 1000 I'd buy it just to use as transportation
KEY POINT: if the motor is legit, but say he smogged it illegally. and you get pulled over and they pop the hood, YOU will have to get it bar'd. which will suck ***!
so buy it if you dont mind being a hot boy like me otherwise low ball or pass. theres many cars out there
