Default quick easy radiator fan question....

would a blown or bad headgasket cause the radiator fan not to go on after its warmed up? Also when should it turn on? I got a d16y8 and i think i have a blown headgasket due to white smoke comin out of my exhuast and my radiator fan isnt coming on after letting the car idle for 15minutes. After lettin it idle for 15min, my temp gauge doesnt hit the half line and thats why Im askin if the fan only turns on when it hits the half line. Thanks in advance.

Your engine isn't hot enough. At low (normal idle) the motor is not generating enough heat to warm it up fully. The only time your fan will come on is after a while of normal driving.

That does sound like a blown gasket. If you're getting oil in the coolant or coolant in your oil, that would definitely be a problem. The fan has nothing to do with this though, and it sounds like your fan is fine; as long as the car isn't overheating.

well theres no oil in my coolant. I kinda hooked up a few hoses wrong on my intake manifold before and got coolant in my oil. But I fixed it and changed my oil twice. I think theres still a little more coolant in there, thats why its still smoking a little. But I dont know. The head gets kinda hot though. Its been almost a year since I got to drive my car so I dont know if the heat is normal. Should I drive it around for a bit to see if the smoke will go away? Im scared that I might warp the head or somethin bad.

If you drained the crankcase, there shouldn't be any coolant left in it - especially if you've done it twice. It sounds as though you have a head problem, but now since you've said it's been sitting, it may just be crap burning off, so I don't know what to tell you there. What I can say, is that your fan is probably fine since the car isn't overheating.

Your head should get hot, since it is part of the engine. You may want to take it for a drive, make sure it doesn't overheat, and see if the smoke goes away. I would just watch the temp. If it still smokes after a while of driving (fully warmed for about 20 min or so), starts to overheat, coolant and oil mix, or your oil light comes on, it's probably the head gasket.

damn, im scared of driving it though. I dont wanna make things worse. Oh I forgot to mention that I changed the oil twice in an hours or less that day. I first drained out the first oil that had coolant mixed with it. Changed my filter also. Then I poured in 3.5 quarts of Havoline oil with a bottle of Engine Flush. Let the car idle for a good 20 min. Reved it a few times. Then I drained the oil out while it was still kinda hot. When it wasnt dripping that much oil anymore, I then poured in my 2nd set of oil (Castrol 10w30), it took only 3 quarts and it was full. Whats up with that? Thats why I think theres still a little more coolant in there. I also started her up again a few days ago, let her idle for a good 15 or so minutes. I thought I seen a little greenish color on the inside of my exhuast.
