Default ATP fittings

Does anybody what kinda of metal is the 1/2 to -10An fitting? I"m having a tough time trying to tig it onto the oil pan. I put a magnet on it to see if it's brass and it's not. Thank you.

Blue or red - aluminum
goldy color - brass or coated steel
dark grey - steel
coated - your guess is mine.

If it's magnetic that will tell you it's a ferritic metal (some stainless steels, most mild steels).

If a magnet doesn't stick to it, it's most likely aluminum.

If you can't tell the difference between materials, I'd suggest not welding that yourself unless you want problems down the road.

My oilpan is steel, not aluminum. I thought all stainless steel were not suppose to be magnetic? The fitting is coated, but I brushed the color off prior to welding. I need help since this is the only thing that is keeping me from finishing my project.

400 series is a great example of magnetic stainless steel.
