Default A few Ls/vtec questions

I was possibly thinking about buying a hatch (92) that was an lsvtec hybrid. All i know is that is has an ls block witht he rest GSR components and GSR head. I know the swap was done correctly but when my bro and i drove it a while ago, it was pretty slow. Could it possibly be because he is using a p72 (gsr) ecu? Which ecu would work the best? uberdata probably?

This car shoudl be a 14 second car correct?

my friend just got his ls/vtec built, stock bottom and stock gsr head, and he was only putting down 149 hp and 113 ft lbs. i put down 145.5 hp and 114.8 ft lbs with a b16 so if its not done right it wont be a 14sec car

it depends on what pistons you use....my bad i worded that vaguely ^^......

i guess you can build them however you want, but in order to make power from them you have to upgrade the pistons to either higher compression for all motor set ups or lower compression ones for forced induction.

Do you know anything else about the motor? such as how many miles on the on the block? what tranny? who built it? you could try a chipping your ecu or use hondata and go tune it. go get a baseline run and see where you're at.

it could just have worn out ignition, and not producing as much spark as new ones would. its a good idea to tune a car up when you first purchase it i think.

or maybe the timing is off? whatd the dude say when you talked to him about the car?

First off, the GSR head was the first problem in putting down some serious power. How thick is the headgasket? Sounds like you've got a good motor for boost! I've got a homie who has a LS Vtec (stock) with a thicker headgasket that boosts 12 or so pounds and pushes 350HP. Tuning is the essential key to making your motor last long- never forget that!

all lsvtecs are built different. in fact all motors run different. the p72 ecu is not the problem. i was running on a p08 chipped up and i ran fine. 13.9 on street tires.

i think the comp for an lsvtec is around 9:1.

good call.

with ls block, gsr pistons, gsr head, gsr OEM 3 layer head gasket, stock 81mm bore, the CR is 9.4ish or 9.9, depending on USDM or JDM GSR pistons, according to bojangs CR calc.

http://www.bojangs.com/calculator/

thats without possible milling, etc.

no wonder it feels so much slower.

actually an lsvtec w/ gsr pistons has more compression than a gsr.

i built a ls/vtec turbo hatch last summer it put down 284 hp before tunning i was pretty happy with that i am currently doing a b16 crx and i think the ls/vtec was better.

They definetly do! They just dont seem to last long w/ stock internals.

http://www.c-speedracing.com

has an article and good info about ls/vtec.

it's under the "how to" section of their site.

ls/vtec is pretty complex and requires properly built and tuning to do it right.

there is an endless amount of threads on this topic. do a seach and ck out that site

I have a LS/Vtec in my car untuned with type R header and exhaust i made 158 and 124. Then after tuning i made 186 with 139.7 and it pulls hard up til about 7500. Now this was on a 4 gear pull and safe tune im going turbo in the next couple months just waiting on money and parts to come in.
