Default tranny question

I am looking at buying a used crx si tranny for my Hf but the ad says not sold with VSS comes as is. I searched to try to find out what VSS is but didnt find much but forsale's and wtb's. Any info on what it is? does for the car?or tranny? Please Help! I might not get my tranny if it's a problem Any feedback appreciated!

it's your vehicle speed sensor...it's what your spedometer cable plugs into

Do you have the one off your old tranny? Its the place where you plugged your speedo cable into...

Not sure if they are the same fitment or not though, but to give you an idea of what it is, trace your speedo cable out of the firewall, and see where it plugs into the tranny, or if its been removed already just look at the hole where it goes.

Except one minor difference. On 88-91 Civics and CRXs, the VSS is actually built into the gauge cluster. It is driven by the cable which connects to the speedo gear on the tranny. Stock USDM 88-91 Civics and CRXs did not have electronic VSS units on the transmission.

So if I am buying a si tranny with no VSS, is it possible for me to buy another one or should I just look to another tranny or what? Can I use the VSS off of my Hf tranny on the Si tranny? All the feedback is appreciated. Thanks you all!

You mean the speedo gear unit, right? Like I just said, these transmissions do not have a VSS. If it does not have a speedo gear unit, your best bet would be to buy a new one from a Honda dealer.
