Default Too Much Oil

I added a bit too much oil to my car by not reading the stick right...doh so it's a half a quart over, and i smell this oil type smell through my heater...is this bad? It does leak so i figured i'd let it leak out and it should be fine, could this ruin the engine?

ya. u should drain some of that oil out. too much oil will ruin the pressure inside the engine and can bend and distort valves. dont bring the rpm's too high

A half quart is fine. You will never ever bend valves by putting in too much oil. You may some spilled a little oil when you were adding it and its burning on your something, maybe your manifold and your HVAC is pulling in the smoke into your cabin.

Ok, well that makes me feel better. I suppose I'll just go easy on her, I don't often raise the RPM's over 3500 anyhow. I'm using 5w30, so maybe since it's a thinner oil it won't make the engine work too much harder.

well if you do empty the pan dont re-use that oil because some kind of dust or dirt may get into it. also, another thing you could try is get a thin hose stick it down the dipstick shoot, suck on it like a straw until the oil gets to the top, then put your finger on top and lower it to the ground and gravity will do the rest. haha thats the ghetto way though since you're close to changing the oil just wait it out.

hit the vtak! and the oil will slowly burn itself away

i'd rather have extra oil than too little oil.

dont suck it out. imagine oil in your mouth...no the best idea.

1/2 qt aint bad but if it comes out all churned up, your counterweights probably churned the **** out of it making it expand even more. Saw a jetta with over 10 qts. ran 5,000 miles. The oil that came out looked like a diareah milkshake....NASTY

The customer who owned the car works on home heating systems.... I told him to come fill my tank half full at home

Most of the oil that's overfilled will get sucked through the PCV valve anyway and gunk up your IM and get burned off. I once overfilled mine by 1/2 a quart and it all showed up in my catch can within a couple days.

That's interesting, after exiting the interstate I often find a small burning smell coming to stop after the ramp. This must be some of the oil being burning up after going through the PCV to the Intake Manifold.
